Climate-related changes are impacting where whales feed and spend their time. For example, recent marine heatwaves have caused declines in krill, driving humpback whales closer to shore in search of other food sources. This proximity to the shore has increased their risk of injury and death due to ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement. National marine sanctuaries, marine protected areas, and Indigenous-led conservation areas play a critical role in protecting whales by working to mitigate these risks. However, the highly migratory nature of whales means that they often do not remain in any one conservation area for long. This means that effective whale conservation is only possible through the cooperation of marine sanctuaries and protected areas across the entire range of a given whale species. With support from Lenfest Ocean Program and in partnership with NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and California Marine Sanctuary Foundation, we recently held a three-day workshop that brought together experts and practitioners from across the globe to strengthen partnerships across marine sanctuaries, protected areas, and Indigenous-led conservation areas and to establish common goals for whale protection. AFterall, water is 70% of our Earth's surface.

🌌 Many Comcaac community members are experts on the ecological dynamics of sea turtles. Today, because of intensive fishing pressures, the endangered status of these species is recognized by local communities, and sea turtle conservation initiatives have taken root. 🐢 🐚 We support the Grupo Tortuguero Comcaac, a local conservation organization that works to protect endangered turtle species on the Comcaac people’s ancestral coastline. 🐾🏝 💚 The Grupo Tortuguero Comcaac is primarily composed of local Comcaac youth, who focus on the conservation of three species: olive ridley, green and leatherback sea turtles across 20 kilometers of desert coastline. ⏩ To learn more about this initiative, check out our Ancestral Tides page and video through the link in our bio. 📸: Francisco Barnett, a Comcaac community member by @panthera_juanca #climatecrisis #oceanconservation #oceanlife #marinelife #nature #saveourseas

🐋 Whale Watching season is fast approaching. ACCOBAMS “High-Quality Whale-Watching®” certified marine operators will again play a crucial role this summer not only by promoting responsible whale and dolphin observations, but also by minimizing human disturbance and by preventing marine litter pollution. Certified HQWW operators contribute to inform about cetacean conservation and the need to have healthy marine ecosystems. #HQWWCertification #CetaceanConservation #protectmarineecosystems #seaimpactofhumanactivity

Sea turtles have been the focus of many conservation efforts globally. These marine reptiles have been the victim of poaching, climate change and pollution to name a few. However these creatures play an important role in our ecosystem and as such loosing such animals can be detrimental to the health of marine ecosystems. Follow me as I interview Andrés Mendez a Costa Rican Biologist and discover why sea turtles are so precious and ways in which we can help these conservation efforts. https://lnkd.in/eP6B_jGG #conservation #seaturtles #conservationefforts #conservationeducation #costarica #nature #environmentaleducation #environmentalprotection

Did you know, today is #WorldSeaTurtleDay? It's today in honor of Dr. Archie Carr's, Sea Turtle Conservancy’s founder, on his birthday. NB&T assists in sea turtle conservation by providing a few different styles of flipper tags for sea turtles. By tagging sea turtles with flipper tags, we can learn more about their migratory patterns, growth rates, survival, and reproductive output. The more information we have on these beautiful creatures, the more we can do to help conserve them for the future.
