The equivalent generation to 15M Europeans and 720k households respectively 📈 25 hours time return per driver and a €83M increase in GDP from productivity increases. Time really is money ⌛️ 💰€1.3k of savings per car driver per year When you consider that a city like New York 🇺🇸 or London 🇬🇧 would reap 9x these benefits and a city like Paris 3x, the impact is substantial and would put cities and countries a good way towards their net-zero targets. This post by Tom Nutley is a great example of the potential bikes have in cities. Whilst not directly related to the post, the question I hear all the time is ‘do cargo bikes actually work for business?’ The answer, whilst not so simple, is yes. Let me explain… Whilst many of us know that cargo bikes are an incredible mode of transporting small to medium sized goods around cities without: the pollution💨, high cost💷 or congestion🚦that cars and vans face - There are still many foundational elements which have not been developed that would allow businesses to transition to cargo bikes without so much guesswork on the ‘how’. Clovertronix is focusing on the how: - How fleet users are guided into choosing the right vehicle for their operations.🤔 - How riders are trained to enhance road safety & riding efficiency 🦺🔋 - How vehicles are maintained in order to maximise downtime and efficiency🛠️ All of this and more, in order to make the switch to LEVs not only accessible, but also affordable. 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞! Maarten Fonteijn and I both chose Queen's epic cycling song as the soundtrack of our year 2023. Why? Because the potential for biking and micromobility in general to make cities more liveable, social and sustainable is enormous. And there seems to be a growing interest in that fact. 🚲 Yesterday McKinsey & Company published a brief report on what happens if a minimum of 22,5% of car trips is substituted by micromobility. This estimate is not arbitrary, since car owners in a 2022 survey indicated that they could replace 22.5 percent of kilometers now traveled by private car with some type of micromobility. Guess what the impact will be: 🔹Lower emissions 🔹More green space 🔹Lower waste 🔹Lower mobility spending 🔹More free time and productivity 💀 Sounds like a no-brainer to me. But it requires a serious paradigm shift. Because the report also concludes that if this change happens in the current context: '𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦—𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 20 𝘵𝘰 42—𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘣𝘪𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥.' And herein lies the challenge for cities: see mobility as the key to unlock your city and not just as a goal in itself. That requires cross-domain thinking, policy making and action, as also nicely illustrated by Vincent Viguié and Charlotte Liotta in Carbon Brief. 👉 My take?
