THE HEALTH DOSE Today, I published an article in the Zambia Daily Mail on snakebite evenoming which is a neglected public health issue. According to the World Health Organization over 5.4 million people are bitten by snakes each year. In Africa, most cases of snakebites go unreported or self treated using unconventional methods. Snake bites are more common in Agricultural farmers and children hence the need to raise awareness especially with the coming of the rains. How can we improve access to basic health in rural areas of Sub Sahara Africa? 🤔 We partnered with Healthy Entrepreneurs to support Community Health Workers in becoming Community Health Entrepreneurs, where they receive training and are able to sell quality health products at a lower price. This does not only increase the sustainability of the program, but also increases the reach to the most isolated communities in Uganda. Every year, snakebites claim over 30,000 lives across sub-Saharan Africa, leaving thousands more with life-altering disabilities. Alarmingly, 70% of cases go unreported, highlighting systemic gaps in healthcare access and public awareness. In rural areas, where agriculture and livestock form the backbone of livelihoods, vulnerable populations bear a double burden: poverty and the constant risk of snakebite envenomation. Kenya alone records over 15,000 snakebites annually, with high-incidence counties including Pokot, Baringo, Kilifi, Turkana, Kitui, Makueni, West Pokot, and Busia. As Dr. Blessing Kasenge emphasizes, improving access to antivenoms is more than a healthcare issue—it’s a matter of justice. The resilience showcased in Rudo Nalondwa’s survival story underscores the urgent need for global action to address this neglected health crisis. This is our moment to act. Let us unite—health leaders, innovators, and policymakers—to confront this challenge head-on. Access to treatment and prevention is not a privilege; it’s a fundamental right. 🎧 Listen to this important episode of Africa Daily here: [https://lnkd.in/d9D8_EKX] Together, we can create a future where no life is lost to snakebites 🌍 #EndTheNeglect #WorldNTDDay2025 #EndNTDs #Snakebites #HealthEquity #Africa #GANE

In Adwa, Ethiopia, faith leaders are stepping up as powerful advocates in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). At NALA, we believe that collaboration with diverse community voices, including religious leaders, is key to creating sustainable change. Through open dialogue, these leaders shared how their influence can promote health-positive practices like handwashing and safe sanitation while encouraging social inclusion for those affected by NTDs. Their role as trusted voices in their communities is vital in breaking stigmas and fostering health equity.
