Feb 6 2024 I applied for a Senior Vice President, Infrastructure Engineering & Operations role at BECU. Aug 16, more than 6 MONTHS later their recruiting department sends me a massive 20+ page survey asking me about my application experience.... let that soak in. I can barely remember what I had for breakfast 2 days ago let alone a job application from 6 months ago. Thankfully I keep detailed notes on every job I apply to so I was able to recall some details. Very disheartening that I am being asked for feedback so late as if they just don't care. A hiring managers most important job is putting the right people in the right position at the right time. A recruiters most important job is helping the hiring manager find the right people. So they both avoid people as much as they can and depend on scripts, filters, and automation to interact with people in their behalf. If finding the right person is so important, why can't a hiring manager take the time to call every single candidate and speak with them for a minute or two? That is what I do when I hire people. I call every relevant applicant and introduce myself and get to know them a bit and take a few notes. Hiring managers don't hire every day. We hire a few times a year. We should NEVER be too busy to spend time on the most important part of our job.... people. #hiring #recruiting

📌Job Titles - Software vs Core Industry 📌 We often see titles such as "Associate Vice President", "Vice President" and above for software engineers in our country with relatively less experience (maybe less than 10-12 years).. Rest of them are all managers! I have hardly seen any software engineer in this experience category having title as engineer or senior engineer. Rationale given was that these are mostly client facing roles. So, client feels valued when they see email coming from a vice president than an email from a senior engineer. 😀 Now, compare this to our core industry. Here, it takes us 5-6 years on an average to move from engineer to senior engineer position, then another 6-7 years to become lead engineer, and then same for next job titles. Add to that, many companies tend to have intermediate grades between engineer and senior engineer level (e.g.. Asst. Senior Engineer or Asst. Lead Engineer). I guess, we also need to create similar titles for core industry to make client feel valued! 😁 #corporatelife #humour #jobtitle
