HR Leaders - want the TRUTH about COUNTER-OFFERS?   Years ago, I gave one to an HR manager. Here's what happened...   👉 First of all, she was essential to our department and someone I was not prepared to let leave the organization.   👉To keep her, I matched their salary, promoted her to senior HR manager, and expanded her responsibilities.    👉 She accepted it and was happy...for a while.   However, she and I both knew the expanded role was a stretch. And her performance review reflected that with a "meets expectations" rating.   This was not the "exceptional" rating she was accustomed to getting throughout her HR career.     She understood but was very disappointed.   👉 She left 6 months later.     This time, I was prepared with a backup and wished her well.    Today, we have a great relationship. She's become CHRO in a large service organization and has done well in her career.    And I couldn't be happier for her.    ---   👉 Here's the BRUTAL TRUTH about counter-offers.   1. Know that when you give or receive a counteroffer, it often delays the inevitable. And if you're lucky, they last about 6-12 months.     2. Be honest and candid with all parties. If you are, the relationship can be maintained if you want it to be. The passage of time can heal all wounds.   Just my experience with counter-offers?
