This is a powerful quote as it highlights the priorities and objectives of modern air forces: generating effective combat capability as quickly as possible. In operational terms that means maintaining standards, ensuring safety, minimising inefficiencies, maximising throughput, and identifying opportunities for improvement / expedition. Technology is a powerful enabler, but optimising real-world and simulated, and at what stages, using what modes, etc. is a much harder challenge to solve. 🇬🇧 🎖️ The British Royal Air Force (RAF) will test the idea of training pilots with #AugmentedReality enemy planes. In other words, completely virtual planes that appear only through the trainee pilot's visor. This #innovation has the potential to create several efficiencies as a result of a reduced need for planes in the air, less fuel consumed, and being able to maximize the amount of training conducted per flying hour. MEDIA RELEASE: RYAN AEROSPACE (Australia) WINS MAJOR CONTRACT TO SUPPLY US NAVY Gold Coast Australia – 23 September 2023. RYAN AEROSPACE (Australia) has won yet another major US Military Contract. Working through Prime Contractor Vertex Solutions, RYAN AEROSPACE will be supplying the US Navy with advanced extended reality (XR) flight simulators, commonly referred to as Immersive Training Devices (ITDs) as part of a USD$28m deal. This procurement will bolster the Naval Aviation Training Next (ATN) program. The contract will see delivery of fifty extended reality flight simulators (initially) using the already proven ITD which is very versatile and can be adapted to a wide range of aircraft platforms. This represents a notable advancement for the Navy's undergraduate pilot training program, bringing about improved efficiency in aviation training and aircrew production. This enhancement is set to result in substantial time and cost savings for the Navy. Managing Director, Chris Ryan said he was thrilled to win this contract as it is the next stage of their ground-breaking work on the Pilot Training Transformation Program (PTT) where RYAN has already delivered close to 300 virtual reality training devices. The fact that they were designed with the future in mind, they can now rapidly and cost-effectively be transformed into mixed reality simulators for a different aircraft. This is important for government and taxpayers as they are getting great value for money. The contract will be delivered within the next twelve months. The Leonardo AW609 tiltrotor vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft programme set another major industry capability milestone after its first successful ship trial, which was recently conducted with the support of the Italian Navy. The AW609, formerly the AgustaWestland AW609, and originally the Bell/Agusta BA609, is a twin-engined tiltrotor VTOL aircraft with an overall configuration similar to that of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey. From 3-12 April, the AW609 AC4 aircraft, fully representative of the final production configuration, performed demonstration trials relocating from Leonardo’s facility based in Cascina Costa (Samarate) to Maristaer Grottaglie Naval Base. The tiltrotor, with test pilots and flight test engineers from Leonardo (supported by Italian Navy personnel for the embarked operations), took off from the base inbound from the Italian aircraft carrier (ITS CAVOUR – Navy Fleet Flagship), 20 nm offshore, showing its effective approach, stable deck landing, and touchdown capabilities. During the demonstration, the AW609 provided a unique opportunity to further strengthen the awareness of the outstanding advantages of Leonardo’s tiltrotor in a dedicated maritime environment. This testifies how the world’s first tiltrotor set to achieve a civil certification meets demanding operational and safety standards.
