Sam encourages founders to hand 20% to our first 80 people why? The start-up world has a 95% fail rate, it’s a perilous journey. This means we need the right crew to steer the ship to the X on the map. Investors and founders already lay out the hockey stick curve in the pitch deck (AKA the map) right. Though tend to forget the mindset of employees…do they really believe in getting there too? But if we give them a stake in the treasure, then they have a stake. They take the biggest risk of all joining the expedition and with equity they’ll go the distance to make sure it was worth taking it. The other piece of the puzzle is figuring out how to make that process of issuing equity as smooth sailing as possible, and explained to employees in human terms. A real mind bender is hearing about how Chimney Trail Health’s performance over the past year outpaces almost all of a given VC firm’s portfolio companies by a country mile and then remembering how we “weren’t a good fit for the fund’s thesis”. 🤷♂️ If you’re on a startup launch journey, do not despair when a fund has to turn you down. LOTS of factors in fund management that you have no visibility on. Also, this is just one guy’s observation but, there seems to be a general lack of bravery and independent thought in the space right now. Lots of “follow the leader” action. Your idea isn’t necessarily bad. Maybe just not en vogue. Run your own race my friend. No matter how fancy their checkers board, remember your customer likes to play 3D chess. Earn your customer FIRST. The rest will take care of itself.

Angel investors just want a sense of feeling and belonging. Not being alone in the journey. That’s one of the key takeaways I got from my time at the Angel Investor Summit hosted by South East Angels. It’s why we’re building Table for Ten. Dom and I ask ourselves weekly how we ensure we don’t ’just become another syndicate’. Yes dealflow is a core part of this all, but for the angel investors that are putting their cash on the line - how do we make this a better experience in a world where all the spotlights are shining on VCs. We want our angels to feel like they are giving value where they best can. We want our founders to feel like they are getting more than just a few £££s to spend.
