Fort Worth’s Future: A Strategic Expansion
The City of Fort Worth announced the next phase of construction on the Fort Worth Convention Center expansion is expected to begin in 2026. The $606 million project will modernize the aging complex to meet the demands of a rapidly growing Fort Worth.
Hunden Partners and Rob(in) Hunden have been at the forefront of this transformative effort, having conducted numerous studies over the past 20 years. A 2019 study projected $6.9 billion in new spending over the next 30 years from the expansion which includes an additional 97,000 square feet of exhibit hall space, 48,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and a 50,000-square-foot grand ballroom designed to accommodate larger conventions and drive economic impact.

Castlegate and Harmony Works are where Sheffield began: the meeting of the Don and the Sheaf. These two projects are, in no small part, the result of a decade-long collaboration between the The University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council to turn the city’s ancient past into a reimagined future. In particular its schools of Architecture and Music alongside the indefatigable Professa Vanessa. That it will become a reality in 2025 — just a year away — seems almost more difficult to imagine.
What should not be forgotten, however, is that none of these schemes would have been possible without a Conservative Government under Boris Johnson putting billions behind his levelling up and the high street rejuvenation agendas.
Much derided by our intellectual elite, these two policies are helping reshape, largely for the better, the heart and soul of our once vibrant cities.
Universities and councils who are the beneficiaries of these policies should be sufficiently generous to acknowledge it in all their public and private communications. When the EU funded such schemes back in the with recycled UK taxes, recipients of ERDF had to agree to give full prominence to this. Castlegate and Harmony Hill, much as it may pain some to say it, is one of Boris Johnson’s lasting legacies.
Sheffield is building a new riverside park that will bring the outdoors into the heart of the Outdoor City.
Work has started to transform the former Castle Market site in Castlegate into a fantastic new public space.
Castlegate is one of the oldest parts of Sheffield with a rich cultural history and is where the river Sheaf and the river Don meet.
The new park will reveal part of Sheffield’s medieval castle, include a new events area, and open up the River Sheaf with new public art that will showcase the history of the site.
It will also provide a spectacular focal point for the Castlegate Quarter, an emerging city centre neighbourhood that will include substantial new mixed-use development comprising offices, homes, leisure, entertainment, and retail uses.
The completion of the park is due in the summer of 2025, and I can’t wait for it to open!
I have no idea how many new commercial developments are built in #Boston every year, and I hardly know the names of any of them, but I know quite a bit about this big, new office, hotel and retail development.
Lyrik Back Bay.
Sure, it's situated on Massachusetts Avenue between Boylston and Newbury Streets over the Mass Pike in the Back Bay neighborhood, so it's hard to ignore.
But it's some of the street-level signage that really caught my eye, not necessarily the unique location punctuated by two tall buildings that will house a citizenM hotels hotel, the LEGO Group's new US headquarters and CarGurus.
Seeing a line - er, a lyric, I should say - from the Led Zeppelin classic, Stairway to Heaven, especially caught my attention, admittedly because I'm a big fan of the band and someone who just so happens to live, well, to the west of the city.
Given that this development is being built just a stone's throw away from Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory of Music and Symphony Hall, leveraging the words to a famous song to help promote your arrival on the scene is a clever, relevant way to engage your audience of passers-by, people who just may do business with you down the road or even spread the word about your upcoming opening like I'm doing right here and now.
Those words, that signage...that's great #marketing, #advertising and #PR if you ask me. That's taking full advantage of what success is all about in the real estate business - location, location, location.
I can't wait to check out all the new restaurants and stores coming to Lyrik Back Bay. It's a feeling I get...that it's going to be a very popular destination for me and countless others.

Today, I had the opportunity moderate the ACRE Inland Empire City Showcase. We had 13 cities present including Town of Apple Valley, California, City of Fontana, City of Hesperia, City of Lake Elsinore, City of Menifee, City of Moreno Valley, City of Murrieta, City of Ontario, City of Redlands, City of Rancho Cucamonga, City of Riverside, City of San Bernardino, and the City of Eastvale, CA.
It was a ton of information, but some overall themes included:
1. Increased densification with residential being the dominant product type driving most retail or office related projects. We will see a lot more 4 story and higher projects with attached parking structures.
2. A focus on downtown revitalization or downtown development.
3. Increased architectual requirements - if it's new, it is going to be attractive.
4. Cities reexaming property that they own or control, especially where parking lots are involved in an effort to create the type of product listed above.
5. A focus on the environment with these new projects including encouraging residential development near public transportion hubs.
Below I am pictured with Rhonesia Perry, MBA with Fontana, Amanda Hernandez, MBA with the City of San Bernardino, and Orlando Acevedo, MBA with the Town of Apple Valley. We had great conversation about all the opportunties and obstacles that they face when trying to accomplish their goals.
WORKING IN THE CITY: Stefanie Bales Fine Art
This #LittleItaly boutique gallery is filled with “dreamscapes” and Bales' strong feminine point of view.
Company motto: “To make living itself an art, that is the goal.”
How can the city be more business-friendly: Offer more diversity for small businesses. The hospitality industry seems to be 90% of business downtown. It’s less of a destination for art, shopping and culture. The majority of downtown real estate is so unreasonably priced. It doesn’t allow space for other types of businesses to exist. I’m hoping the city will eventually offer subsidized commercial real estate. I used to rent a small studio space in the Broker’s Building (the lofts above the old Hooters). It was bought out and developed and that is the same story that just continues to play out.

“Working In The City” is The San Diego Sun’s feature Q&A series with downtown San Diego business operators. It’s a way to get to know the city by meeting the people who work here. This is the eighth in an ongoing series.
Downtown is Louisville’s only neighborhood that has the largest number of businesses, hotels, museums, and attractions — and visitors to our city.
Earlier this year, Louisville Downtown Partnership released the 2024 The Downtown Strategy to focus our efforts on creating and maintaining a beautiful, vibrant, and lively downtown that all can enjoy. The strategy is a 10-year plan that guides the development of projects in Downtown, based on core principles taking into account the current-day challenges, opportunities, and desires of Downtown stakeholders and the community at large. The decade-long plan sets forth a vision and implementation projects to improve Downtown Louisville and spur economic growth.
The 2024 Louisville Downtown Development Strategy: A New Paradigm for Downtown Louisville sets forth a list of guiding principles and strategic initiatives intended to activate Downtown and create places where people want to be, want to live, and want to invest in.
