Copenhagen's 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥 isn't just a waste-to-energy plant - it's a testament to design thinking's power to transform.
CopenHill is a multi-functional marvel. 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒚 for residents translated into accessible recreation. 𝑰𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 sparked a groundbreaking concept: waste as fuel for both energy and fun. 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 yielded an architectural landmark that seamlessly blends functionality with community engagement.
This is design thinking at its finest: human-centered, innovative, and impactful. CopenHill isn't just a building; it's a blueprint for a future where design ascends, fueled by the very challenges we face.

As the third Academy project in our "Movement and Mobility" theme, we are excited to introduce you to #OKURO. Timo Miura, one of our talented Industrial Designers, developed this groundbreaking project as his master's thesis within the #PHOENIX_Academy. It explores the future of public transportation, reimagining urban mobility as a platform for human interaction and challenging the status quo of public transit systems.
Therefore, OKURO is more than just a transportation solution; it's a vision for transforming how we experience public mobility in densely populated urban areas. The project delves deep into the issues facing public transportation today, proposing a vehicle that not only withstands the pressures of city life but also enhances its passengers' emotional and behavioural responses. At its core, OKURO is about creating spaces that resonate with people, turning a bus ride into a more meaningful and pleasant experience.
Key features of OKURO include:
Mobile Architecture: Redefines vehicles as moving architectural spaces, shifting the focus from mere utility to creating environments that foster human connections.
Human-Centred Design: This approach prioritizes passengers' emotional and psychological wellbeing, considers how public spaces impact mood and behaviour.
Urban Mobility as a Platform: Encourages the transformation of public transportation into a living space, promoting interaction and positive social experiences and introduces the concept of the "third place" as an essential extension of our living spaces.
Timo's work boldly challenges the established public transportation systems, pushing the boundaries of how we think about mobility in urban settings. Although OKURO is still in its early stages, it invites us to rethink our current mobility behaviors and explore new possibilities for the future. Timo sees this project as just the beginning of a much larger conversation about how we can evolve our public transportation systems to better meet the needs of modern cities.
Stay tuned as we continue to showcase more innovative projects from the PHOENIX Academy that are set to reshape the future of wellbeing.

A Little Late, but overjoyed!
Late on Friday night, my team and I were honored with the prize for Outstanding Digital Submission at the Biodesign Challenge 2024, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Seeing our project showcased on such a prestigious global platform was a humbling experience, reflecting the immense effort we poured into it over the past four months.
Our project, titled "Mirage: Eco Solutions from Marble Remnants," explores innovative ways to utilize marble slurry—an industrial waste product—to create sustainable solutions for the local community, including thermal protection. This project's win is a testament to the collective hard work and dedication of so many individuals.
First and foremost, I extend my deepest gratitude to our mentor, Mudita Pasari. Your guidance was invaluable, constantly pushing us to think creatively and improve continuously. This achievement would not have been possible without your support and insights.
Special thanks to Vatsal Agrawal for your steadfast guidance throughout the project, and Souvik M., who was our voice and advocate, making our projects reach greater heights. The Design Village for providing a platform and community through which this was possible.
Most importantly, I want to celebrate my incredible teammates; Raghav ModiDivyansh Jain and Prakriti. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented and passionate team. The journey was filled with invaluable learning experiences, and I cherish every moment we spent working together.
Here's to many more milestones and innovations ahead! 🌿

How can we integrate tools used by architects for urban development into a circular learning tradition that empowers communities to shape their own futures? #GXN#DESIRE#NewEUBauhaus#Transformation ↓
An educational collaboration across generations and disciplines has come to an end. But the final product is the start of something bigger.
As part of the initiative Desire an Irresistible Circular Society, #GXN initiated a co-design process at Ole Rømer School in Gadehavegård, 20 km from Copenhagen, incorporating the ideals of the New EU Bauhaus intiative. The two-week project focused on young people's input and involved 40 eight-graders who envisioned a 30,000 m2 park for all ages in their neighbourhood. GXN provided resources and tools to bring their design to life and used the lessons learnt to create a toolkit that is envisioned for similar initiatives.
The overall project bears the name "DESIRE 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝘾𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙩𝙮 for a good reason: dedicated to cultivating a sense of #belonging in the design processes while embracing a #global perspective, supporting a #circular mindset, and expanding #aesthetic concepts – 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀.
We are very excited about the outcomes of the DESIRE project at Ole Rømer School in Gadehavegård. We hold deep confidence in the potential of young people, trusting in their ability to actively participate in their communities and contribute to the creation of a biodiverse, healthy environment for future generations and the planet. 🫂🌍🌿

🔊 Traditional doesn't mean regressive 🔊
"We are very traditional here" is something I hear often as a barrier to tech-driven innovation.
As we see in The Talavera Project, you can drive forward innovation as a culture and mindset supported by advanced tools, without replacing tradition or erasing history. It's about looking to the future, without ignoring the past. When done right, innovation preserves legacy, it doesn't destroy it.
What does The Talavera Project tell us about innovation?
🖊️ It works with tradition, not against it
🧠 A shift in mindset can enrich culture, strengthen identity, and create new opportunities
🔐 You can rethink regulations and security in a safe way
💭 Failure to embed innovation and share knowledge prevents growth, increases risk, and devalues workers
♻️ New approaches help to achieve circular sustainability and reduce cost
Do you see any intersections between innovation and tradition at your own workplace? How can we see opportunities at these intersections, rather than barriers?

Reflections & Directions: Future Island-Island Strengthening the GTE Workshop (WP3) ⏩
The recent workshop was distinguished by the creativity and collaboration of the professionals in attendance, offering a rich ground for generating and refining innovative ideas. From dynamic speed chatting sessions and visualising connection networks to crafting design manifestos and thematic project briefs, attendees ignited their creative sparks and envisioned uncharted circular system solutions for Rathlin Island and beyond. 💭
The room was inspired by pitch presentations from within the designer ecosystem including the FII team, practice partners & ecosystem engineers, emerging creatives, as well as the winners & finalists from the ‘Regenerative Rathlin’ competition held in December 2023. Their insights and experiences provided valuable perspectives that enriched collaborative efforts and sparked discussions throughout the gathering.
Building on the thematic design manifestos from Day 1, attendees worked in groups to develop design project briefs. By flowing between different groups and themes, everyone could contribute their unique insights, allowing for a dynamic review and adaptation process. This collaborative effort focused on themes of food, water, energy, landscapes, and materials and led to the co-creation of innovative concepts.💡
From this exercise we identified several exciting briefs for future investigation, with upcoming cross-pollination discussions to include media and communication, collaboration and networking, funding and future-proofing, research and theory, and materials and design.
The briefs include:
🔸️Archiving Futures
🔸️New Life, Old Ruins
🔸️Water Story
🔸️Birds & Materials
🔸️Cross Connections
Looking forward to diving into these concepts and continuing our exploration. The workshop has set a strong foundation for work package design collectives, fostering knowledge exchange through cross-disciplinary teams, and providing the freedom to collaborate and innovate with input from diverse communities and perspectives.🚀
Stay tuned as we embark on these new creative journeys!
