Great news that Orchard Wharf has been recognised as Highly Commended at the NLA Awards in the mixed-use category. Designed by Howells Architects in collaboration with Aukett Swanke and Spacehub, Orchard Wharf sets a new standard for mixed-use developments, integrating riverborne logistics with residential and public spaces. Located on a safeguarded wharf, the development combines industrial river use with the creation of affordable homes, student housing, and enhanced public spaces, making it a sustainable model for urban development. Rio Architects 📣 “Good news for the Cathays community as 64 social housing homes are given (unanimous) planning permission. The redevelopment of Medallion House, a key site along Crwys Road in Cathays, aims to help regenerate the area with a new mixed-use development that serves the residential and commercial needs of the community. The design will transform the long-term empty site, creating 64 social housing homes, three private flats and 1,072m2 of refurbished commercial space. It will also include a new 750m2 community facility with a garden and café area – perfect for bringing people together. Reminder: Many of the best examples of urbanism in America are small towns! Things like vibrant walkable commercial districts, safe streets with slow traffic, centrally-located rail stations, inviting public spaces, and trails and connections to parks and schools are often some of the defining features of Main Street, USA. Let's not lose sight of that! Urbanism isn't a matter of big city vs small town Americana- we all benefit from urban principles applied well in our communities, regardless of scale.

The success of great cities lies in their ability to integrate architecture and urbanism to support people, culture, and sustainability. London’s network of interconnected neighbourhoods exemplifies this, cultivating self-sustaining communities where individuals can live, work, and engage within a localized, yet globally impactful, urban setting. Our latest project Opus, at Bankside Yards, marks a significant milestone in London's ever-evolving skyline, standing out as the UK's first major mixed-use estate to be entirely free from fossil fuels. In this recent article by Knight Frank, we explore this burgeoning ecosystem that is now emerging as a micro-city own its own right. Over in the City, ONE BISHOPSGATE PLAZA brings a novel perspective to the traditional context of a historical plaza serving as multifunctional hub for the community. Rejuvenating a key site along Bishopsgate into a dynamic mixed-use urban development that contributes to the City’s ambition of becoming a 24-hour destination. "Relaxing design standards for new apartments will simply produce apartments in which it is difficult to relax," said our Chair Rob Stokes as the Living Cities Forum kicked off at the State Library this morning. "Contrary to the suggestion by the NSW Productivity Commission that we need to relax design standards to facilitate housing development, I argue we need to champion design excellence to justify housing development! "Quality urban design becomes more important the denser our cities become." 💡Have your say in the comments below! #ThoughtLeadership #UrbanDesign #Housing
