Traditional sea pens face challenges - disease, storms, and environmental harm. #OceanLiteracy 🐟 Abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (#ALDFG) has been described as the most harmful form of marine plastic debris according to the Global Ghost Gear Initiative! ALDFG harms marine life mainly through 'ghost fishing,' where discarded fishing gear continues to trap fish and other marine animals. In addition to this, plastic degrades over decades, shedding microplastic fibres that are ingested by fish and other filter feeding organisms. Abandoned fishing gear has been found intact and still shedding microplastic fibres after 30 years! The EU funded NETTAG+ project contributes to protecting and restoring marine ecosystems and biodiversity, in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 through the solutions to prevent, reduce and remove ALDFG. NETTAG+ encourages EU fishers to adopt more environmental-friendly fishing methods, and work towards developing more sustainable fisheries in ecological, economic and social terms, contributing also to the EU Common Fisheries Policy.
