My friends and I completed the 7.5k Memory Run yesterday to raise funds for Australians living with dementia. Starting to get a bit nervous now about this charity walk that I will be doing with my young daughter and best friend on Saturday. I typically try to do a challenge like this once a year. Last year I did a swimming challenge which was great & earlier this year I attempted a skipping challenge but it was an epic fail as I had a fall and injured my shoulder. However doing things for charity like this has a number of benefits including: 1. Raising money for charities in need. 2. Gaining awareness of these charities 3. Challenging your normal routine & also your own expectations of what you yourself are capable of. 4. Getting exercise. 5. Teaching my daughter that some people aren't as lucky as us & that where we can we should we should do our bit to help. 5. Creating new memories with my daughter who is growing up far too fast for my liking. 6. Spending quality time with my best friends putting the world to rights. 7. In this instance (when my daughter has had enough) getting drunk in the daytime & it being socially acceptable. So on Sunday and probably at least Monday when everything aches and I am shattered beyond even my imagination that I did make a difference. Colours of Motherhood: Fun stats about the Magazine It's currently being read in 2 states, can we spread it to another before the end of the year? I promised $1 from every sale up until the end of November to be donated. We raised $62 to go to The Nurtured Village Hampers, which is equivalent to donating more than 8 meals for a mum in need. This is so special that we've been able to raise some funds for mums. You are all amazing, that's 8+ meals more than they had funds for before this. 5 waiting rooms currently display the magazine, and I'm hearing feedback that it needs to be in every waiting room - all businesses that look after mums this is perfect! It's currently found in 3 medical practices, 1 psychology clinic and 1 physiotherapy clinic. Have you read the magazine, or know a clinic/ practice that could pop a copy in their waiting room? Let's extend the validation of motherhood experiences and help more mums. Can you let them know about it, or leave feedback on what you thought of the magazine? ☺️

Did you know that DEBRA UK provided 424 support grants totalling £105,407 last year? The demand for grants is increasing each year and was 14.2% higher in 2023 than in 2022. Jade, one of our Community Support Area Managers, explains how specialist items funded through support grants, make a difference for children living with EB. "Babies who are born with EB can't use normal nappies or wear normal clothes. The seams will affect their skin. A pair of soft seamless mittens are really good to wear, so they don't scratch their face or their skin. The same goes for seamless baby clothes, it reduces the friction on their skin. Unfortunately these items can be expensive so we are able to offer support grants for families to help with the cost of these items." Yesterday I came across a thought-provoking article that highlighted the importance of discussing organ donation with family. It's really incredible how being a donor can not only save multiple lives but also improve the quality of life for many, many people through donations like corneas, skin, and tissues. Being an organ donor not only saves lives but it also helps people to see, heal, feel more confident and be more mobile, as I've personally experienced as a knee tendon recipient. I'm immensely grateful to the person that made the decision to donate after their death. As a donor tendon recipient I'll be walking my son to school and kicking a ball about with him very soon which truly means the world to me. The relatively new UK Donation Law of 'Opt-Out' was designed to increase donors; however, it's facing a serious hurdle. The lack of discussion about individual donation wishes is leading to uncertainty and refusals to donate during critical moments. It's crucial to have a conversation with loved ones to ensure your desires are known, removing doubt in the most difficult of times. In our already tense everyday lives, we try not to think about them too much. But this does not change the reality: children are still fighting for their lives. We cannot help anyone with fear. Fear will only prevent us from seeing these little ones, from understanding their situation, and from considering what we can do to help them. We often post about the activities our residents enjoy each day. These activities are vital to ensuring each resident can live a fulfilling life, which is at the heart of all the Meath does. But just as important, if not more, is how each and every resident is kept medically safe. Epilepsy is a very complex condition in which there are many risks we have to monitor each day. One risk is the risk of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). People with epilepsy who have more than one type of seizure, are on multiple anti-seizure medications and have nighttime seizures are at the highest risk for SUDEP. A reliable and state-of-the-art carer-on-call system is necessary to help keep the vulnerable residents we care for safe. As part of our capital appeal, we are upgrading our internal safety systems.
