#DidYouKnow? The Coalition of Municipal Fisherfolk Associations (COMFAS)’s response to COVID-19 was recently featured in AgriCord’s newsletter, Crossroad. The article highlighted the farmers’ organization’s (FO) shift to oyster and seaweed production after the challenges faced by their supply of grouper to urban areas, particularly hotels and restaurants. Adapting to challenges faced during the pandemic has proven COMFAS’s capacity to explore options by changing its business models. This transition led to more funding opportunities from the local and national governments. COMFAS is a Philippine FO supported by AsiaDHRRA through the Farmers’ Organization for Asia (FO4A) program. The project is coordinated with AgriCord and funded by the EU through the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Private sector investments are crucial for transforming Africa's food systems, addressing food security and spurring economic growth. By funding agricultural technology, sustainable farming practices, and supply chain innovations, private sector actors not only seek profitable returns but also contribute to food security and sustainable development across Africa. At this year’s Africa Food System’s Forum #AFSForum2024, we look forward to more private investor participation as we aim to Innovate, Accelerate and Scale Africa’s food system transformation. Managing Partner at Sahel Consulting | Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Expert | IMAGINE Leader
Last week, I participated in a high-level seminar on resilient drylands: Innovation for sustainable agricultural landscapes and livelihoods. This webinar, organized by the FAO Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP), explored innovative approaches to addressing the complexity and harnessing the potential of dryland agriculture to build local resilience and adaptive capacity. It aligns with the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–2031, which emphasizes the transformation towards more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. Specifically, I shared some insights on how our work at Sahel Consulting and African Food Changemakers is promoting entrepreneurship and agrifood innovations in the drylands across Africa and highlighted the need to: • Support agri-food entrepreneurs to scale successful private sector-led initiatives, e.g., backward integration models and service provision models for farmers. • Empower agrifood entrepreneurs to build resilience against climate shocks. • Leverage infrastructure development to harness dryland resources such as solar energy to power agriculture and other industries. • Create knowledge hubs for data and information exchange for informed business decisions and evidence-based program design and implementation in drylands e.g. scaling ongoing initiatives like the African Food Changemakers’ Hub. • Support the creation of a policy platform for a coordinated voice on the development of drylands in Africa. Drylands account for about 75% of the area used for agriculture in Africa, and promoting innovative solutions for increased productivity in drylands is key to building sustainable agrifood systems. #FoodSystemsChange #SustainableAgriculture #NutritionSecurity #IMAGINE #SahelConsulting #FoodandNutritionExpert #AfricanAgriculture

This month, we held our first workshop of the second quarter with small-scale farmers and household producers in the Western Cape Province. The workshop's theme was "Understanding the South African food systems." South Africa offers a fascinating lens to examine the intersection of food, sustainability, and social equity. Participants sat in groups during this workshop and brainstormed questions and possible solutions. The workshop focused on the "WHY" question, allowing the farmers to think, unpack, and assess the root causes of food insecurity in the region. Small-scale farmers and household producers play a vital role in the agricultural landscape, and SPP supports them in taking control of their food production and enhancing their understanding of the challenges they face and how to respond. We also involved our interns as they shared South African agricultural similarities and differences with their countries. Through interactive discussions and expert-led presentations, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of the South African food systems and their critical role in shaping local communities and global food networks. The workshop aimed to inspire collective action towards building more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems in South Africa and beyond by fostering dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. Join us as we embark on a journey to uncover the flavors, stories, and opportunities inherent in South Africa's food landscape. Our next workshop will be in the second week of May; see you there! #foodsovereignty #agroecology #AgrarianReform #landrights #Genderequality #SPP #surpluspeopleproject
