In their new Forefront article, Kate Froeb, Erika Martin, Betty Bekemeier, Tekisha Dwan Everette, Georges Benjamin, and Lisa Simpson from University of Washington, Public Health Accreditation Board, American Public Health Association, Trust for America's Health and AcademyHealth discuss how public health services and systems research generates the evidence to address deficiencies in public health systems and identify transformations needed to establish a more equitable infrastructure. "Not unlike public health itself, PHSSR is sorely underfunded. As pandemic emergency funding is largely rescinded or spent, the nation will likely return to the boom-and-bust pattern of funding increases during public health emergencies followed by a return to chronic underfunding. Breaking this cycle requires, in part, generating scientific evidence to improve our system’s performance, catalyze transformation, and build the business case for sufficient and stable public health funding." "Session Spotlight: Communicating Effectively About Health in a Time of Polarization Everyone has a role to play in public health communications. With this in mind, the de Beaumont Foundation and CommunicateHealth led research to gauge the plain language messages that can drive support and understanding of public health. Not surprisingly, many respondents had difficulty explaining what public health is and what public health workers do. The top line: People are more likely to trust the information they can easily understand. Consider whether people can feel, believe, see, and say your message. Use active verbs, familiar phases, and vivid words to clarify public health messages. Learn more about yesterday's sessions on our blog: https://buff.ly/3x7rwFy
