Our data shows that across every year group, economically disadvantaged students have, on average, lower career readiness than their peers. Careers education is helping to tackle disadvantage; but remaining barriers to equity need to be addressed. The central mission of improving #careers provision everywhere is key to closing the gap. Tailored support for young people facing additional barriers is also important and there is much to learn from SEND institutions. Read more about how good careers provision is helping to close the disadvantage gap in our latest report, Careers Education 2022/23: Now & next 👉 https://bit.ly/3T2nnJZ #NCW2024

🌟 What can you do to normalize opportunity? 🌟 ✔️ Encourage your organization's leadership to explore fair chance hiring policies. ✔️ Support local, state, and federal legislation that advocates for hashtag #CleanState and other policies that create equitable economic opportunities for people with records. ✔️ Amplify the experiences of people impacted by the lifelong punishments of a record by sharing their stories with your network and social media followers. ✔️ Volunteer with and support community organizations providing education, training, and reentry services for individuals with records. ✔️ Recognize that 1 in 3 people in the United States has a record of arrest, conviction, or incarceration. These people are our neighbors, our friends, our family members, and the people we encounter every day. ✔️ Acknowledge that just as you've evolved over the years, so have people with records. Nobody is defined solely by their past.

The majority of my clients typically fall into the mid-level to senior professional category. However, after watching Kate Flaherty's advice on 7NEWS Australia, I felt it was important to highlight some key points related to both resume writing and self-awareness. As Kate mentioned, Year 12 students are likely to navigate through approximately five significant career changes in their lives. Having offered advice to Year 12 students while working as a Resume Expert at Torrens University Australia's open day, I observed that constructing their resumes can be challenging, especially due to a lack of experience. One piece of advice I consistently share is to emphasise key projects, leadership initiatives, and extracurricular activities. This approach not only showcases their capabilities but also highlights their potential beyond traditional work experience. These insights hold true for all professionals; mid-level professionals are likely to undergo at least one more significant career change, and numerous jobs of the future have yet to be created. With this perspective in mind, self-awareness and the ability to comprehend who you are, your strengths, skills, and even shortcomings, become valuable assets at any stage of your life. Developing these skills earlier in life proves advantageous. Wishing all Year 12 students and professionals alike success and fulfilment on their career journeys. Continuous self-discovery and adaptation are the keys to thriving in an ever-evolving professional landscape. Cheers!

"Paths of Opportunity" from TNTP is a MUST-READ publication for those of us working across sectors of education and workforce development. Their analysis identifies five interconnected factors critical for economic and social mobility: -A strong academic foundation that enables young people to learn on grade level -Career-connected learning to build the skills and experience for evolving careers -Opportunities to build social capital and activate networks to advance goals -Personal support in their lives to navigate toward goals and stay on track -Civic and community engagement to participate fully in society and shape a better future In Arkansas, these factors are now identified and partially established at the state level through legislation, policies, and initiatives; however, these have not become a reality for ALL students in ALL schools across our state. We must join forces as state agencies, school districts, community organizations, and philanthropy to improve student life outcomes regardless of household income, zip code, gender, and race.
