Oregon Prepares for Landmark Offshore Wind Auction
For the first time, the offshore coast of Oregon will be the focus of a major wind energy auction. On October 15, 2024, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will auction two significant wind energy projects: one off Coos Bay and another off Brookings. These projects mark a crucial step in expanding America’s renewable energy capabilities, with the potential to generate over 3.1 gigawatts of clean energy—enough to power approximately one million homes.
This auction underscores the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to advancing clean energy and fostering economic growth. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland highlighted the importance of this milestone, noting the administration's efforts to support a sustainable clean energy industry while creating family-sustaining jobs nationwide.
The projects will cover large areas—over 61,000 acres near Coos Bay and more than 133,000 acres near Brookings. Bidders will have the chance to contribute to this transformative industry through community benefit agreements, workforce training investments, and engagement with underserved communities, ensuring that the benefits of renewable energy are widely shared.
At Empire Energy Offshore, we see this development as a significant step forward for the offshore wind sector. Our expertise in offshore wind EPC, post solutions, consultancy, and floating wind projects aligns well with the needs of these upcoming auctions. As the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction partner for the WHEEL proposal—one of only five designs advancing to Phase 3 of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s FLOWIN Prize—we are at the forefront of this technological revolution. Together with our strategic partner, Largo Concrete, Inc., we are playing a pivotal role in harnessing wind power, building a sustainable supply chain, creating high-quality jobs, and driving innovation that will make floating offshore wind a cornerstone of America’s energy future. As Oregon embarks on this ambitious journey, we're proud to contribute the expertise and dedication needed to make these projects a reality.
As we continue to track these developments, we remain committed to fostering innovation and collaboration in the offshore wind sector, ensuring that projects not only meet energy goals but also support local communities and create lasting value.
