🌍 Solar Electric Cooking: A Partnership for Lasting Change 🌟 Through the Solar Electric Cooking Partnership (#SOLCO), Last Mile Climate, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (Uganda), ECOCA East Africa, and other key partners are fostering collaboration between governments, private sector partners, and civil society to advance clean energy solutions and increase access to climate finance. This transformative initiative is helping to make solar-powered electric cookers more affordable and accessible, especially for low-income households in refugee-hosting communities. 💡 Why Solar Cooking? Currently, over 90% of Ugandan households rely on wood or charcoal to cook staple foods like bananas, putting immense pressure on natural resources and contributing to climate change. But through innovative financing tools like low-interest loans, pay-as-you-go models, supplier incentives, and credits, we can make the transition to solar-electric cooking achievable for all. 🔋 The Advantage of Renewable Energy Solutions While the upfront costs of solar-powered cooking may seem high, the operational costs are remarkably low. With the right financing in place, in just one year, households can recover their investment, paving the way for long-term financial and environmental benefits. 🚀 The Role of Policy and Partnerships With supportive public policies and regulatory frameworks, governments can channel critical climate finance to the last mile, reaching the most vulnerable communities. As #Uganda reviews its nationally determined contributions under the #ParisAgreement, these initiatives show how every fraction of a degree matters in our collective fight against climate change. 🙌 Everybody Has a Role to Play From the private sector to civil society, every stakeholder has a part to play in advancing climate-smart solutions that empower communities and protect our planet. 🔗 Read more about SOLCO and other #ClimateActionPartnerships here: https://lnkd.in/eKXpic3R 📽️ Watch this powerful video by UN Environment Programme and UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre to learn more about the impact of SOLCO and the importance of partnerships in driving climate action. Empowering Island States: Clean Energy, Bold Future The ocean connects the world, but for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), it also creates barriers—leading to challenging logistics, high energy costs, and an overdependence on imported diesel. 🌴⛴️ These islands are among the most vulnerable to climate change, despite contributing less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions. Energy insecurities threaten their economies and communities, underscoring the urgent need for smart, tailored solutions. SkySails systems harness high-altitude winds to tackle sky-high energy costs. They’re a decentralized, reliable, and clean solution that works in island conditions, even withstanding typhoons. They offer sustainable energy in places other technologies can’t reach, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and opening up the site's economic potential. Working closely with our partners from SIDS, we understand the shared challenges these regions face. Together, we’re developing projects worldwide where airborne wind energy has the potential to reshape their energy systems and serve as a model for other nations, contributing to global goals like SDG 7 and SDG 13. Our site in Mauritius is just one example of our commitment. Our mission in SIDS is clear: supporting communities to harness their winds and take their energy future into their own hands, shaping a sustainable and self-determined tomorrow. 🌬️🌎 What’s your take on the energy challenges of island nations? It's a collective societal responsibility not for Energy professionals only! #Climatechange affects us all – #heatwaves, changing rainy seasons, and other disruptions are a testament to its growing impact. But addressing it isn't completely the job of international bodies like #UnitedNations and #energy professionals. It's a collective responsibility that starts right at home. Here’s how you can contribute to Kenya’s #EnergyTransition, even if you’re not directly in the energy industry: 1. Adopt Energy Efficiency at Home: Switch to energy-saving appliances, embrace natural light, and minimize energy wastage. This will help reduce the amount of energy consumed and lower the need for fossil-run generators. 2. Support #Renewable Energy Solutions: Opt for clean energy sources like solar lamps for your household or small business. These choices reduce reliance on non-renewable resources. 3. #Advocate and Educate: Raise #awareness about climate change response in your circle. Encourage sustainable practices, such as using public transport and tree planting. Kenya’s energy transition is critical for mitigating climate change. Whether you're in the energy sector or not, your choices matter. Together, we can build a cleaner, greener future for our children. #ClimateAction #NetZero #ParisAgreement #Energy

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 As First Nations people, we are often told that we are sovereign nations, yet in practice, our sovereignty is limited by external control. For example, can we truly be considered sovereign if we cannot even decide who becomes a citizen of our Nation without the approval of a foreign government like Canada? Our ability to exert true sovereignty is weakened by our dependency on Canada, whether through legal constraints or through the belief that we must rely on them. To strengthen our position and reclaim our independence, we must focus on developing self-reliance in key areas. One essential area is 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. For instance, my community, 𝗔𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, has taken a significant step by investing in a solar farm. This initiative not only provides electricity to our members but also eliminates distribution fees—a substantial part of a typical electricity bill—by producing power locally. This is a powerful example of a community-led project, but the impact could be even greater if individual members also contributed by installing solar panels or wind micro-turbines on their own properties. 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 is another critical area. By growing more of our own food on Native land, we can reduce our reliance on external sources. This could be achieved through community-based projects, such as collective gardens or farms, as well as grassroots efforts by individual members who invest their time and energy into cultivating gardens and small family farms. Even something as simple as growing herbs in a window can make a difference. Ideally, we would see a combination of both top-down community-led projects and individual grassroots efforts working together. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 is equally vital. Access to clean water is a fundamental need for every community, and each First Nation should explore and implement ways to secure this precious resource independently. Whether through water treatment facilities, rainwater harvesting systems, or other innovative solutions, securing our own water supply is a crucial step toward true sovereignty. These efforts not only strengthen our communities and enhance our independence, but 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. By focusing on energy, food, and water independence, we can begin to reclaim our sovereignty in a meaningful way, reducing our reliance on external powers and ensuring that our communities thrive for generations to come. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? 𝗜 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄. #IndigenousSovereignty #SelfDetermination
