Prioritizing Employee Mental Health Based on a SHRM sample study of 1405 workers from early 2024, 39% reported that their employers pretended to care about the mental health of their staff, signaling organizations to reevaluate their policies and how they can better implement for improved change. To stave off employee burnout, which can increase turnover and affect a company’s bottom line, creating a culture where taking earned time off is not frowned upon nor difficult to process through HR is a good starting place. Emphasizing the importance of employee wellness including mental health from the head of leadership down is paramount. 😊 Employee wellbeing has become a strategic matter for many organizations. When studying HRM strategies for employee wellbeing I came up with this linked framework. It focuses on topics that many other HRM wellbeing strategy models and frameworks are doing as well. One clear finding from these was that the more traditional approach to individual wellness behaviours (eg. exercise, sleep, nutrition) might not bring as good result to wellbeing at work as will the focus on the workplace matter. These matters are for example a culture of employee participation and inclusion, autonomy, coaching and empowering leadership as well as opportunities to develop and grow. Also the social interactions at work and the sense of belonging play an important role like mentioned in the framework below, connection and community. 🤲 In my thesis I have chosen to look in more details how the leaders can contribute to employee wellbeing. Mental health issues in the workplace have risen to a critical level of concern within the business world, especially in the context of the post-pandemic world. Anxiety is no stranger to the workplace. Let’s delve into some key insights: Lost Productivity and Financial Impact: According to the World Health Organization, approximately 12 billion working days are lost each year due to depression and anxiety, resulting in a staggering cost of around US$ 1 trillion in lost productivity. (1) Workplace Well-Being: Nearly half (48%) of employees report a decline in their mental well-being, and 60% feel emotionally detached at work. (2) Recommendation: Prioritizing employee well-being is crucial for maintaining a productive workforce. Stigma and Recognition: Only 13% of employees feel comfortable discussing their mental health in the workplace. (2) Encouragingly, 70% of U.S. employers now recognize mental health as a significant workplace issue. (3) Strategic Approach Needed: While 67% of senior leaders express commitment to workforce mental health, most employers are not approaching it strategically. (2) Redesigning Work Environment: About 48% of organizations are redesigning the work environment to improve psychological well-being.
