When we first announced our pledge to end the use of virgin plastic two years ago, many were shocked by the enormity of the task. As a supplier and technology partner to many global banks, we know that eliminating plastic requires joint efforts from all parties involved. Ending the use of virgin plastic presents several challenges: 💰 Sustainable options have traditionally been more expensive. 🚀 Technological advancements in material choices are necessary. 🌱 A more sustainable supply chain is required to replace virgin plastics. 🌍 There is a lack of awareness about how plastic pollution damages the environment and threatens human health. We are progressing toward a portfolio without virgin plastic by: 🔍 Exploring alternative and sustainable materials to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. 🛠 Embedding sustainability mindset in product design from the outset. 🤝 Formulating a strong eco-partnership-based supply chain. 📣 Raising customer awareness through programs developed with banks. Since the announcement of Pledge 2030, we’ve seen more industry players and partners moving in this direction, making their own pledges to fight unnecessary pollution. Importantly, we see banks acting as a mirror, reflecting the collective efforts of society towards a more sustainable future, even in economically challenging times. More good things to come.... #Innovation leads the way to #sustainability. Below is an example of how fish waste is turned into #bioplastic, an alternative to plastic. An invention by MarinaTex.
Chemical Engineer Turned Sustainability Manager | Helping Professionals Thrive in Sustainability | Mastering Green Skills & Personal Branding through Digital Tools
By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight. You may have seen this alarming stat from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2016), and it’s a stark reminder that the current trends are far from encouraging. Honestly, plastic nailed it—it’s strong, durable, flexible, and cheap. Every trait is incredible. But the one that outweighs them all? Plastic isn’t going anywhere. Once produced, it lasts... or ends up in the ocean. The video highlights the way forward, focusing on circularity, waste, and sustainability. As an engineer, I naturally lean toward solutions, and for me, the sweet spot is where 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 intersect. Take 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐓𝐞𝐱, a compostable alternative to plastic packaging made from fish waste. It’s the kind of innovation that transforms waste from a costly problem into a business opportunity and a sustainability solution. This is what sustainability is all about—turning challenges into opportunities for a better future. 🌍 ♻️ If you found this useful, 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭 to share these insights with your network. 🔗 Follow Zyad Hatquai for more tips for sustainability professionals. We're celebrating Earth Day this year under the compelling theme of "Planet Vs Plastics" - highlighting the environmental & health hazards of plastic pollution. Here are a few actionable ways to incorporate this theme into your corporate sustainability strategy: 1. Rethink Packaging: Take a close look at your product packaging and identify opportunities to reduce, reuse, recycle or eliminate plastic. Explore alternative materials, redesign your packaging with the end state of the packaging in mind. 2. Implement Circular Economy Practices: Invest in closed-loop systems where products can be recycled, repaired or refurbished at the end of their lifecycle. Continuously improve your usage of recycled materials. By keeping materials in circulation and out of landfills, you reduce not just the environmental impact of plastic waste but also help address poverty amongst the most vulnerable communities. 3. Build meaningful partnerships: Collaborate with your suppliers and business partners to reduce plastic usage throughout your value chain. Set clear targets and work together to find solutions for packaging, logistics, and waste management. Through shared responsibility, you can amplify the impact of your efforts. 4. Shared values with consumers: Highlight the shared values with your consumers who are looking to make environmentally positive choices in their lives. Share your values, plans & reward eco-friendly choices. Remember it doesn't have to be perfect, it's important to start & have a plan to continuously improve from thereon. 5. Educate and Inspire Employees: Empower your employees to become sustainability champions within your organization. Provide training and resources to raise awareness. Encourage employee-led initiatives such as waste reduction efforts within the office, community clean-ups, or plastic-free challenges to drive positive change from within. By integrating these strategies into your corporate sustainability agenda, you can play an active role in fighting plastic pollution while strengthening your brand reputation and driving long-term business value. Helping brands and organisations drive positive impact for people and planet through brand, marketing and corporate strategy
In our final Earth Day Planet v’s Plastics blog instalment, we’re diving deep into the inspiring journey of Corona. This isn't your average brand; it's a beacon of hope in the battle against plastic pollution, embodying what it means to be a true citizen brand. Corona's story is testament to the power of ambition backed by genuine commitment. Picture this: a global beverage giant not just reducing its plastic footprint but flipping the script entirely to become net zero on plastics. Yes, since 2021 Corona now recovers more plastic than it puts out into the world. They proudly claimed the title of the first global beverage brand with a net zero plastic footprint. This transformation wasn't an overnight sensation. It's a narrative that began well over a decade ago when Corona made waves with its beach clean-up campaigns in 2008. Back then, they were pioneers, sparking conversations and getting their hands dirty—literally—to protect our oceans from plastic pollution. Fast forward to 2021, and Corona's net zero dream became a reality, marking a historic milestone for corporate sustainability. What's more remarkable is how they brought their stakeholders along for the ride. From engaging consumers in citizen science to forging alliances with supply chain partners committed to sustainable packaging, ingredients, and energy solutions—Corona's impact ripples far beyond their product. So, here's to Corona – a brand that proves that when passion meets purpose, anything is possible – a true citizen brand. Making it no surprise they were recently named the most valuable and fastest growing beer brand in the world, according to Brand Finance 2024 Global 500. So, as we bid adieu to Earth Day, let's carry their torch of sustainability forward, knowing that with determination and collaboration, we can make a real difference. Cheers to a cleaner, greener future – one bottle of Corona at a time. #earthday2024 #Netzeroplastics #coronabeer #citizenbrand #beaforceforgood

LOIM has joined like-minded asset managers in supporting the historic UN Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution, which is being developed this week at the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution in Ottawa. The international, legally binding commitment has been compared to the Paris Agreement on climate change and Kunming-Montreal framework for regenerating biodiversity. Transforming the plastic value chain is essential in combating pollution and the emissions caused by production and logistics. A circular model is possible, with investment and innovation required to: Produce alternative materials Establish new usage models Massively increase recycling rates As an investment firm, we understand the power of capital in scaling up new technologies to capture opportunities and realigning business models to adapt to be fit for the future. As policymakers set a course for change and consumers demand action to solve the plastics crisis, sustainable solutions are increasingly sources of commercial advantage. This conviction underpins our Plastic Circularity strategy, which aims to invest in innovative materials, usage models and recycling solutions focused on disrupting today’s practices to create a new value chain. Brands are facing significant pressure to prove their sustainability credentials, as demanding consumers shift to more sustainable purchasing behaviours and brands. Every business and organisation, small or large, generates plastic waste, either as part of manufacturing processes, as products and packaging, or simply through daily workplace refuse. Now you can offset your plastic footprint in the same way as your carbon footprint, in a simple and cost-effective process, using CSR Plastic Credits from Corsair. With offsetting, you finance the removal and recycling of plastic waste equivalent to your plastic footprint. Becoming plastic neutral is a low-hanging ESG fruit, that will resonate with both customers and investors. Not only do plastic-neutral brands appeal to consumers, but certification can be used in your ESG reporting, in your marketing and employer branding, as well as on products, packaging and services. At the same time, plastic is removed from the environment, for recycling into new products, in a new circular economy. Can your brand afford not to be plastic neutral? #Corsair #CorsairGroup #CSR #Amplivo #CorsairNow #corsairinternational #PlasticNeutral #pyrolysis #PlasticPyrolysis #cleantheocean #plasticpollution #letscleantheplanet #cleantheworld #cleanerfuture #PlasticCredit #plasticfootprint #JussiSaloranta #JussiVeikkoSaloranta #ESG #environment #recycling #certifiedplasticneutralMalta
