🌟 Exciting News🌟 We’re thrilled to announce the kickoff of a new pilot program at St. Joseph's Villa & Foundation called The Happiness Programme, by Social-Ability. This is the first-of-its-kind activity that blends interactive, sensory light technology with a structured and guided program of training and support. Thanks to a grant from the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation's Discovery and Adopt Program, The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton is supporting this one-year pilot, which launched during the Villa's Seniors Month ribbon cutting event on June 20. The event was attended by more than 40 staff, including many recreation therapists, Foundation members, and residents who had an opportunity to interact with the technology. Through this pilot program, we aim to: ✅ Increase physical participation and resident engagement by 20% from baseline. ✅Boost resident social interactions by 20% from baseline. ✅Improve family and staff satisfaction with resident engagement through the program. The program will be seamlessly integrated into daily and weekly recreational schedules, with a special focus on one-on-one sessions in various settings. We expect significant improvements in physical, social, and cognitive well-being, combating apathy. Staff evaluation surveys will also be conducted after 2-3 months to gather feedback and assess the program’s impact. We’ll also capture patient and family voices through interviews. A huge shoutout to Deborah Fernandes (Clinical Lead), Niloofar Heidarinejad BSc, MLT, MHA (Project Coordinator, Innovation & Partnerships), Mackensey Bacon (Manager, Innovation & Partnerships), Zayn Moosa (Innovation & Partnerships Intern) and the incredible team at St. Joseph's Villa Dundas and Social-Ability for making this a successful event. Social-Ability aims to provide safe, meaningful, and engaging activities for those living with cognitive and physical care needs. It also equips staff with a tool to care in a creative, engaging way that allows residents to access hundreds of programs. The concept of a 'Living Lab' is an exciting approach to innovation that we're bringing to the Central Coast through our Health & Wellbeing Living Lab (CCLL). We're thrilled to share more about this collaborative model and what it means for our community. Over the next few posts, we'll explore the Living Lab concept together, discussing how it works and why we believe it's a powerful way to support healthy ageing on the Central Coast. We hope these insights will spark your interest and inspire you to get involved in shaping the future of health and wellbeing in our region. Let's start by looking at what a Living Lab is... What exactly is a Living Lab? At its core, a Living Lab is an innovative approach to developing solutions that brings users into the heart of the creation process. At the Central Coast Health & Wellbeing Living Lab (CCLL), we're applying this concept to healthy ageing. We create a collaborative space for older adults, researchers, businesses, and healthcare providers to co-create solutions for ageing well. Imagine a place where older adults from the Central Coast are leading the design of new solutions, where a tech developer can get instant feedback from an 80-year-old on their new app, where a nurse can work with engineers to design the perfect home care device or where researchers are working alongside tech developers, carers and older adults to evaluate new solutions independently. That's the power of a Living Lab! Stay tuned as we explore more about how Living Labs work and why they're so important for innovation in health and ageing. #LivingLab #HealthyAging #Innovation

Self-Employed Persons (SEPs) enjoy the relative freedom of developing their own creative practice and being their own bosses. To build resilience in their careers and to foster an overall well-being, SEPs should consider how they can integrate care practices into their work in the arts. Created with the support of NAC’s Self-Employed Person Grant (SEPG), the Library of Care (LoC) is a free online resource for arts workers that outline concepts around care in artmaking processes, as well as offers concrete tools that can be immediately applied to projects and practices. It's an initiative by CITRUS practices, a loose group of arts workers and practitioners who came together in 2021 in hopes of deepening and expanding conversations around better practices in the arts. The platform features topics like improving communication and consent practices in the workplace, making the LoC an excellent resource for both SEPs and employers to refer to for developing better practices in artmaking! For a sustainable #CreativeEconomy built on care for ourselves, the people around us, and the people we work with – register your interest to access the LoC here: http://bit.ly/LOCaccess #OurSGArts #ArtsSEPs — Follow us for tips on how to unlock new opportunities and grow meaningful careers for the long term. Why Activity Programs Are the Key to Dementia Care Excellence 🌟 Are your residents truly thriving? Are your staff feeling valued and engaged? In memory care, the importance of well-designed activity programs cannot be overstated. They’re not just a “nice-to-have”—they’re a critical component of exceptional care. I’ve seen firsthand how thoughtfully crafted activities can transform a memory care unit: - Engagement:Activities tailored to residents' abilities and interests foster a sense of purpose and joy. Whether it's art therapy, music, or simple games, these activities stimulate cognitive function and emotional well-being. - Behavior Management: Engaged residents are happier and exhibit fewer challenging behaviors. This leads to a calmer, more harmonious environment for everyone—residents and staff alike. - Staff Satisfaction:When caregivers see the positive impact of these activities, their job satisfaction soars. A team that feels they’re making a difference is less likely to burn out or seek other opportunities. Investing in a robust activity program is one of the most effective ways to elevate the quality of care in your facility. It’s about more than just filling time—it’s about enhancing lives. Is your facility maximizing the potential of its activity programs? If you're looking to create a more engaging and fulfilling environment for both residents and staff, let's connect and explore strategies that make a lasting impact. #DementiaCare #ActivityProgramming #SeniorLivingExcellence #MemoryCare

Day 1 of TechFest is done! ✅ Thank you to everyone who came out to the Spark Health Future of Health & Wellness Day! Here's a recap of the sessions for those who couldn't join us: • Angela White started the day off with a thought-provoking presentation on teen wellbeing. Technology offers great opportunities for kids to learn breathing techniques and positive reinforcement, but teenage mental health is complex. Kids need chances to explore independently and practice decision-making by exploring without parents away from home - how could technology support this? • CEO of Spark Health John Macaskill-Smith highlighted cutting-edge technologies, like the benefits of private 5G networks over Wi-Fi for large-scale venues like airports and hospitals, ensuring dedicated bandwidth for emergency services. He also showcased virtual and augmented reality applications in "dry hospitals" for medical training, allowing students to explore the human body in stunning detail. Spark Health is uniquely positioned to test the latest tech from giants like Meta, Google, and Microsoft, thanks to their collaboration with multinational companies entering New Zealand. • In the aftertoon we heard about APIs are the connection and standards that allow the health sector to begin to share data with Al Duncan and Karl Donaldson from Webtools. They have developed a community of users that include doctors, nurses and pharmacist who are actively involved in providing feedback about what they need and want in the tech they use regularly. • Jim Brown from Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora shared that it's not an easy thing to start to set standards for hundreds of applications that structure data in different ways, but as the private and public sector comes together and has the hard conversations, things get easier and easier and interoperability becomes a realistic future state. NZ health currently holds 5.2 million people's health records for those enrolled with a GP with another 200,000 un-enrolled. • Madeleine Martin from the Health Technology Centre in the Arts Centre lead a fascinating panel with 4 local medical device companies (Jessica Fitzjohn, Tiro Medical, Iain McMillan, Enztec, Steve Leftly, Myovolt) in various different stages from early start up to well established exporter. They shared tips on how to succeed - with a lot of emphasis on quality control and regulatory knowhow. • Kit Hoeben and Hadley Northcott from Deloitte ran a workshop for with mixed teams of clinical and technology people working together to consider how AI can be applied to certain use cases in a clinical sessions. A very popular session with those with no experience in AI looking at how to evaluate AI and those with less medical experience looking at new applications for AI. We ended the day with networking drinks sponsored by STREAMLINERS. And we're back for Day 2 tomorrow! You can register for tickets at techfest.nz #techfest2024 #techweek2024 #canterburytech NZTech Techweek NZ

📰 Research Article of the Week... Using Gerontechnology for Care Transition Conversations in Senior Living Executive Summary: Every day across the United States, thousands of senior living organizations assist with housing transition decisions for older adults experiencing health-related changes. These decisions impact resources for older adults and senior housing corporations, yet these decisions are based primarily on subjective observational data regarding older adults’ changes in function or cognition. Smart homes offering continuous, unobtrusive health monitoring with artificial intelligence capabilities are emerging as solutions offering health maintenance support and objective functional and health information. Such systems are well-positioned to support hospitality staff conversing with residents about transitioning from independent to assisted living. Our interdisciplinary nursing research and hospitality student team used data from two multi-year smart home studies and Stanford Design Thinking to create a case report template to discern how this objective information might be used during housing transition conversations. We interviewed senior living executives and frontline staff having experience with our prototype smart home to co-design the report template. This article presents our case report template and exploratory findings suggesting that standardized reports displaying functional and cognitive changes over time may support hospitality teams assisting older adults and their families with housing transition decisions.
