Within PNG mining industry ... we should not encourage deep sea mine tailing disposal and mine tailing disposal in rivers when working on planning to develop a mine project front end engineering design FEED... let's not allow the developer to design waste mine disposal unit to dispose mine tailings into our sea and ocean... we must make a law and policy that it must be mandatory that inorder for potential foreign direct investment parties,developers and investors to operate mines on our shores..... they must use green technology for mine tailings disposal....this is what we need inorder to control mine tailings disposal methodology in all our mines... we have a gap in our environment policy on controlling mine tailings disposal that needs to be revisited, revised and reviewed, identified and amended ...

What Are Tar Sands? Tar sands (also referred to as oil sands) are a combination of clay, sand, water, and bitumen, a heavy black viscous oil. Tar sands can be mined and processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. The bitumen in tar sands cannot be pumped from the ground in its natural state; instead tar sand deposits are mined, usually using strip mining or open pit techniques, or the oil is extracted by underground heating with additional upgrading. About two tons of tar sands are required to produce one barrel of oil. Roughly 75% of the bitumen can be recovered from sand. After oil extraction, the spent sand and other materials are then returned to the mine, which is eventually reclaimed. Many are misled into thinking the Keystone Pipeline project with Canada is to pump oil.  Only a fraction of oil is extracted, with the rest going to low grade petroleum applications. Roughly 75% of the bitumen can be recovered from sand. After oil extraction, the spent sand and other materials are then returned to the mine, which is eventually reclaimed. Tar sands are mined and processed to generate oil similar to oil pumped from conventional oil wells, but extracting oil from tar sands is more complex than conventional oil recovery. Oil sands recovery processes include extraction and separation systems to separate the bitumen from the clay, sand, and water that make up the tar sands. Bitumen also requires additional upgrading before it can be refined. Because it is so viscous (thick), it also requires dilution with lighter hydrocarbons to make it transportable by pipelines. About two tons of tar sands are required to produce one barrel of oil. Roughly 75% of the bitumen can be recovered from sand. 🌟 Hydraulic Fracturing Technology for initial roof caving in coal mining by CCTEG 🚀 At the Jinjitan Coal Mine's 110 and 111 top coal caving working faces, we made a successful hydraulic fracturing process for initial roof caving, addressing the challenge of initial roof caving in top coal caving faces. 🛠️ The project employed a novel technique combining "conventional short-hole hydraulic fracturing" with "directional long drilling hole hydraulic fracturing." This approach not only solved pre-splitting in the coal seam roof but also addressed the problem of controlling the range and intensity of overburden movement caused by the transformation of large rock masses into smaller ones in the roadway surrounding rock. The short-hole drilling totaled 2,435 meters, with 724 segments fractured, while the long-hole drilling reached 891 meters, with 18 segments fractured. 🔍 The comprehensive assessment of the multi-dimensional hydraulic fracturing in weakening the overburden showed that all indicators met the expected outcomes. When the working face advanced 34 meters, the basic roof pressure occurred, indicating excellent initial roof caving results. 💡 This new technique of multi-dimensional hydraulic fracturing for initial roof caving represents a green, environmentally friendly, and efficient technology for hard roof pressure relief. It offers a novel alternative to traditional explosive blasting techniques for cross cutting and advanced pre-treatment of dynamic pressure disasters. Altilium Clean Technology is pleased to announce that it has completed JORC drilling at its Medet copper tailings project, located in Bulgaria, marking a significant step towards the extraction of copper from one of Europe’s largest tailings resources. The project, comprising 107 drill holes and the collection of 2,500 samples, was completed on time, paving the way for further analysis of the tailings and underlining the company’s commitment to developing a circular economy for critical battery metals. Copper is an essential component in battery anode current collectors, electric motors and charging infrastructure. However, copper miners are struggling to meet growing demand and a significant shortfall is expected by 2030. By recycling historic tailings, Altilium aims to provide a sustainable solution to help meet this demand, transforming what was once considered waste into a valuable resource for the European EV industry, while also reducing the harmful environmental impact of traditional mining. Tailings samples have now been sent to a leading global laboratory testing facility, for multi-element analysis, with the first results surpassing expectations. The next stage will include data compilation and validation, followed by resource modelling, resource estimation and resource classification in compliance with the JORC Code. To check tailings material volumes, an updated survey of the current tailings surface and valley has been completed, and a 3D reconstruction of the original topography developed. All work is being undertaken in accordance with the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code 2012 edition with assistance from Ridge Consultants and designated Competent Person. A maiden JORC resource statement is expected by the end of Q1 2024. This will enable Altilium and its stakeholders to make informed decision and supports transparency for investment in the Medet mine waste recycling project.   The JORC Code is a professional code of practice that provides a mandatory system for the classification of minerals Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves according to the levels of confidence in geological knowledge and technical and economic considerations in geological knowledge and technical and economic considerations in Public Reports.

Wastewater Reuse for Phosphate Mine Mining operations can produce a large amount of wastewater in the form of spent liquor that requires treatment. The wastewater stream has a high concentration of contaminants that need to be separated from the water before it can be discharged or reused.  Dynatec provided a wastewater reuse system for a phosphate mining operation that treats 5 million gallons of wastewater per day. The customer was motivated to put a treatment/reuse system to separate a portion of the compounds in the wastewater for reuse. Also, the desired water quality for discharge met requirements for reuse of several water users in the plant. Wastewater Reuse for Phosphate Mine Dynatec was asked to conduct a pilot to study the feasibility of using membrane technology to purify the wastewater so that it could be reused in mining operations at the site. After several months of piloting, Dynatec was commissioned to supply five ultrafiltration skids, each capable of producing one million gallons per day of permeate. The ultrafilters were a part of the reuse system that also includes nanofiltration and reverse osmosis to produce water and product for reuse. Due to the highly saturated wastewater stream, the pH of the wastewater was maintained at 1.8 s.u. to keep specific contaminants from precipitating in the membrane systems. The ultrafilters have successfully operated at this pH for over 10 years and their life span has not been negatively impacted by the nature of the wastewater. The high strength spent liquor is processed through a series of membranes from UF to NF to RO. The customer has found reuse applications for the reject and permeate from the membrane systems. The final system has alleviated concerns of future environmental infractions and has saved the customer money.
