Our hazard warnings expert extraordinaire Dr Sally Potter recently gave a keynote presentation at the Natural Hazards Research Australia conference. Sally is a global expert on impact-based forecasts and warnings. These types of warnings are triggered by potential impacts such as disrupting traffic or power, rather than the magnitude of a hazard, such as wind speed or rainfall intensity. There is huge scope to make these warnings tailored to your personal circumstances. In her talk (summarised in the article below ⬇) Sally explored what this future might look like. “You’re sitting at your kitchen bench and your device alerts you that in 3 days a cyclone is going to come and hit your area.” “But it doesn’t stop there, it also says that the flooding is potentially going to cut off your road, it might have a link to a shopping list for you to approve that gives you all the supplies that it knows you’re running low on because it’s talking to your smart fridge. “And it can give you targeted information about your particular house because maybe it knows your location, your material and the design of your house.” There's lots of work to be done before we could access an app or similar that could connect multiple data points to provide us with this specific information. But wouldn't this be cool? Sally has left GNS Science to set up her own consultancy, helping agencies develop impact-based warnings. Thank you Sally for your leadership in this space - we wish you all the best for the future! 🖐

In the U.S., the dominant approach to #firemanagement is defined by a transactional relationship, in which humans interact with fire through policy planning and management based on the assumptions that #fire causes a loss of life and property, has negative health effects, and is expensive to battle. A more desirable future perspective is more holistic, basing fire #policy and management on a larger suite of considerations, including the ecosystem services provided by fire and the social, economic, and political values of these services. This more holistic view would facilitate a move away from fire suppression and exclusion as the dominant fire management approach and instead provide the resources and practices to implement fire management activities that increase ecosystem resilience. Early Warning Systems (EWS) can significantly reduce damage from natural disasters by 30% through timely alerts. Despite their proven effectiveness, global coverage remains limited, with significant disparities between countries. The UN's EW4All initiative aims for global EWS coverage by 2027, highlighting the importance of multi-hazard warning systems that provide a tenfold return on investment. Effective EWS must detect various threats, deliver actionable messages, and prioritize a people-centric approach to ensure timely and appropriate responses to minimize harm. The initiative focuses on enhancing data use in critical sectors like health and prioritizes the world's most vulnerable countries. #EWS #ExtremeWeather #NaturalDisaster #EarlyWarning #UN
