On May 22, 2024, SHOFCO and the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) conducted a comprehensive assessment to determine the assistive device needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Mathare, Kibera, and Korogocho. This initiative aimed to identify specific needs, facilitate access to essential assistive devices, and promote inclusivity. The assessment involved extensive community engagement, personalized evaluations, and detailed data collection, documenting the needs of over 100 PWDs. Key findings revealed a high demand for mobility aids and communication devices, and a need for training on the proper use and maintenance of these devices. This initiative laid the foundation for sustainable support, with plans for regular follow-up evaluations, expanding partnerships, and intensified advocacy efforts. Almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life.”- World Health Organization According to WHO, an estimated 1.3 billion people – about 16% of the global population – currently experience significant disability. This translates to 33 million people with disabilities in Pakistan. This story is not just Sakina’s but the untold story of 33 million people of Pakistan who face inescapable poverty cycles perpetuated by systemic inequality, limited access to education and healthcare, and a lack of economic opportunities, trapping generations in a cycle of deprivation. To my global community today is a day I weep for my community and counterparts here in NZ. Instead of empowering my our disability sector to live life to the full, the current NZ government aka National Party coalition have gutted the newly established Whaikaha, Ministry for Disabled people. They have taken the funding side of it and put it in the hands is Minstry of social Development (MSD). Who have always been the cruelest agency towards us. I personally have experienced this on multiple occasions and situations. Leaving Whaikaha only as a policy and Advocacy stand alone agency. The NZ government have removed the power for change. It is a very sad day for us. Instead of moving forward we are taken backwards. There was no consultation on this by any of us. Oh how that alone shows how backwards this government is. In this action they removed our voices and declared us not worthy of many things. Claiming it’s all in the name of cutting expenses. Yet this is not new for National as they have a reputation in history towards Disabilty (I’ve lived through it before ) yet they focus on the rich and ableist to get richer. In addition to actively enhancing access to more dignified, inclusive, and accessible labour markets, it's crucial that our programming prioritises fostering economic independence for people with disabilities. These programs show the importance of providing a foundation for their economic advancement, challenging the societal stereotype that persons with disabilities are solely dependent. They demonstrate that people with disabilities can not only employ themselves but also become employers, breaking the stigma surrounding their capabilities. Can you look beyond the crutches? We certainly can. And our partners like Sightsavers do so all the time. This week, they and many others are participating in the African Disability Forum Conference in Nairobi. The Kenyan capital is also hosting the African Regional Pre-Summit of next April’s Global Disability Summit in Berlin. Some people think “inclusion” is just a buzzword. But for our partners and us, it’s tangible progress: More people with disabilities earning incomes from work. (For example, from farming). More microentrepreneurs growing their businesses. (For example, in rural areas). More people understanding their rights and living their lives free from discrimination. (For example, everywhere). Our Foundation is part of the #InclusiveFutures initiative. This international program has already helped transform the lives of more than three million people with disabilities. But millions more are still waiting. The work continues! Who’s on board?
