💯 Coaching and supporting adult learners holistically increases their success in the long term.
5 ways to support adult learners! It’s no secret that returning learners over the age of 25 face more life challenges than the average 18-year-old, first-year student. Transitioning into the classroom after years of balancing personal commitments and job responsibilities can be intimidating–especially for first generation students new to navigating higher ed systems. When done right, student support services not only help fill knowledge gaps, but ensure returners are on track to meet their education goals over time. To avoid the most common challenges adult learners face, holistic support beyond academics is key. The following strategies have helped to engage, enroll, and support nontraditional students in meaningful ways. 1️⃣ Understand and Address Students' Needs Adult learners are not a monolithic group. They come with diverse needs and challenges. Institutions need to demonstrate understanding and readiness to meet these needs. 2️⃣ Simplify the Application Process Outdated processes can deter adult learners. Streamlining the application process and removing unnecessary hurdles can make a significant difference. 3️⃣ Offer Flexible Programs Adult learners need programs that can accommodate their busy schedules. Highlighting the flexibility and speed of your programs can be a game-changer. 4️⃣ Provide Financial Support Financial constraints are a major barrier for many adult learners. Emphasizing available financial support can help them see the feasibility of their educational journey. 5️⃣ Showcase the Value of Education With rising tuition costs, it's crucial to demonstrate the return on investment of their education. Share success stories and career outcomes to illustrate the value. “By taking things off teachers’ plates that aren’t forwarding student learning, we leave them with the mental bandwidth they need to bring their best to their students.” 💯 A timely reminder from Mark C. Perna in Forbes about both the state of education and what we as edtech providers ultimately need to be doing - providing a product that truly reduces workload for teachers and gets them back to doing what they do best. With 78% of teachers using This is School saying that we saved them time on setting and marking work, it's safe to say we're ticking this box (whilst also forwarding student learning, as 97% of teachers would recommend us based on student progress, but that's for a different post) - but 2024 will certainly be a year to continue building on this as we introduce new subjects, reach new students, and support even more schools. #education #teachers #edtech

“More time gives #students more opportunities to learn and to develop bonds with #teachers and peers, allows teachers more flexibility to meet individual students where they are, and can accelerate learning.” Research suggests that extended learning models can help get students back on track post-pandemic. This article got me thinking about my new vlog with Suzanne Greenfield. As #educators, we know that "teachers know what they need. They know what works," and students are equally capable of identifying what supports their learning journey. The recent insights into the pandemic's impact on K-12 students highlight the challenges our education system faces. Despite these hurdles, district #leaders are working hard to help #students discover fulfilling careers while maintaining core skills. Initiatives like academic recovery efforts and competency-based education models underscore the need to adapt to diverse student needs. We must remain dedicated to creating environments where every student can thrive, whether through traditional pathways or more unconventional methods. Let's empower educators, support students, and pave the way for a brighter future. Stay tuned for our conversation with Suzanne Greenfield. #k12 #equityandinclusion #equityineducation #teachers #schools #education

Student retention takes on a different meaning in the context of adult learners. Adult learners can't always adhere to a fixed academic timeline. They're not 18-year olds with limited responsibility. They're juggling jobs, families, and schoolwork. It's not that adult learners lack commitment. It's just the reality of their multifaceted lives. To retain more adult learners, higher ed will have to embrace strategies that acknowledge these unique circumstances. Flexible pathways, alternative credentials, and ongoing engagement beyond traditional milestones are critical to success. Are you having conversations about this challenge at your institution? What strategies are you considering? #HigherEd #AdultLearning #CollegeAdmissions
