WAY TO GO Allyson Felix! A partial quote from her statement resonated with me deeply: "...some practical things were really hard." 🙃 I think sometimes the nuance of this is lost on leadership when parents return from parental leave. The things that seemed so easy and simple before take so much more effort (getting to work on time for example!). Things that caused no pain before are harder on a person's body after, what is typically a shorter leave than necessary, to fully recover from this major life-giving event. I love that organizations are taking things a step further with their accommodations for new parents upon their return. Hope to see more of this across industries! #WorkingParents #ParentalLeave #StrivingforBetter
Allyson Felix holds a record 20 World Championship medals and 11 Olympic medals, including seven golds. She is acutely aware of what it takes to be an elite athlete, and an elite athlete mom. She is teaming up with Pampers to create the first-ever Pampers Nursery in the Athletes Village at the Paris Olympics. The nursery will offer a space for moms to bond with, nurse and play with their babies, helping to alleviate some of the pressures of competition. “I just knew how difficult it was to compete at the top level after I had my daughter, and some practical things were really hard. And so when I joined the Athletes Commission of the IOC, I really wanted to be that voice for athlete moms, and just take away one less thing for them to worry about in the pressure of competition,” said Felix. Bravo 👏

Let’s not forget that female athletes have always been an *add-on* in the Olympics 🤨 They were banned from the first 1896 games and finally allowed to compete at the 1900 Games in Paris. From a total of 997 athletes, 22 women competed in the five ‘appropriate’ sports for their sex: tennis, sailing, croquet, equestrianism and golf. The fact that an athlete nursery is only just being introduced to the Olympics in 2024 astounds me 😳 This is how deep the patriarchy goes! At Paris 2024 we’re now seeing equal numbers of male-female athletes too. Olympic history is therefore being made by achieving full gender parity on the field of play - it’s only taken 128 years 🫠 ⁉️ What’s next for female athletes in the Olympics do you think? Let’s hope it won’t be another century or more until the IOC starts paying attention and permits much needed infrastructural change 🙏 #Olympics #gender #patriarchy #sport International Olympic Committee – IOC Olympics Paris 2024 Niall Seewang

Speaker Bureau Owner - 2 Decades Recommending Professional Speakers and Related Talent to Companies and Associations. Industry focus: Insurance, Healthcare, Financial Services & Tech.
An unmentioned yet significant revenue stream for past and current Olympians is professional speaking. Over 20 years of running a speakers bureau, I've seen countless speakers parlaying that experience into enduring second careers. They can tap into themes like resilience, success mindset, uncertainty, team building, diversity and general motivation. An Olympian can earn from $10,000 to six figures per speech depending on their name recognition, social media following, sport, agent's marketing investment and other factors. They might be booked dozens of times a year. A few concerns when booking them: - monitoring off the field behavior, associations, social media comments - how good are their speaking skills - are they available to mingle, take photos, sign books, sports memorabilia or other value-added services - how relevant can they make their experience to business and other organizational audiences - how well they can customize - many ex-athletes give the same talk for many years and that's a risk for those who organize events. Contact me for more information and talent recommendations. #Olympics #Olympians #Olympictrends #Olympicathletes #Olympianspeakers #Athletespeakers #eventprofs #meetingprofs

This is simple marketing using incentives. Countries incentivize athletes to perform well and win medals while competing at the Olympics. In exchange, assuming an athlete medals, they’ll be rewarded. Rewards are different depending on the country. Yes, some rewards seem funny. But people in other countries are in need of different things. #Olympics #Competition #Risk #Reward

*The richest sportsman of all time* If we think of the highest-paid sportsman in history, a few names immediately come to mind, such as golfer Tiger Woods or basketball player Michael Jordan or boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. But University of Pennsylvania Classical Studies professor Peter Struck has come up with a theory that can subvert any ranking. According to the scholar, the billion dollars earned in Woods' career would not amount to much compared to the mountain of sesterces that ended up in the pockets of an ancient Roman charioteer named Gaius Appuleius Diocles (also known as "Lamecus", after the Portuguese town of Lamego where he was born). It must be said that chariot races of the time, in terms of public and money appeal, were not that different from today's Formula 1 races - mutatis mutandis. Gaius Appuleius, according to the American historian, was one of the best racers of the time, and his long career, which began when he was only 18 years old, led him to accumulate an immense fortune. The charioteer managed to win 1,462 of the 4,257 four-horse races in which he competed, earning placings in another 1,438 races (almost always second places). As if that were not enough, his comebacks became legendary, sending the public into a frenzy. According to an inscription found in Rome, Gaius Appuleius won as many as 35,863,320 sesterces, corresponding to the incredible figure of more than $15 billion today. This anecdote is interesting because it gives us a glimpse into how sports have always played a central role in society and culture, and invites us to reflect on the perception of value and success through the ages.

What are the Educational, Health, or Economic Benefits to these Players and their Families for that kids uncompensated participation in any additional “NON-SCHOLARSHIP” private third-party postseason football games that pay the Universities and the Conferences for the use of their free labor to put on these highly profitable Bowl events. The answer is ZERO! These additional 1-5 POSTSEASON games are also above the Players’ 12 game athletic scholarship agreement? Our Proposal offers Major Benefits in all three Categories to the Players and their Families! Scholarship Football Players are owed Hundreds of Millions of dollars from this year’s Media contract that uses these Players’ Name, Image, and Likeness NIL without any equitable financial consideration to the Players or their Families! This lost Money could have a major impact on these Players lives, the lives of their current and future family members for generations? We do not support, or agree with the House vs NCAA Settlement or the current covert attempts to extend and expand this Antitrust exploitation of our young (mostly minority) FB & BB Players' labor that the US Supreme Court and Federal District Court have recently struck down as illegal and implausible.
Had an amazing time this past weekend in Tahoe at the American Century Championship! It was an honor to compete alongside so many incredible athletes and celebrities. Thank you to everyone involved in organizing the event and to all the fans who came out to support. Looking forward to next year already!

Local Play Advocate @InvercargillCityCouncil, CE @ParkourNZ | Parkour | Play Advocacy | Health and Safety | Public Speaking
Paris 2024 is just around the corner. I had the opportunity to contribute to this roundtable discussion on the politics and potential of action sports and the Olympic Games. In this excerpt, I talk about Parkour Earth's experience and join the dots on how the International Olympic Committee – IOC supports its international federation members to subsume action sports regardless of their self-determination. Click the link to follow up on the references. "Parkour is not on the Olympic program, but Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) attempted to have it included twice[35] before recently indicating that that is no longer its aim.[36] Globalization scholarship makes claims regarding the capitalistic ambitions of global organizations, including sports organizations, but it is the investigation of sport history that further validates these approaches. This grobalization of action sports alongside traditional sports by the IOC and its ISFs has been a story less about sport diversity and more about the homogenization of governance. This pattern has been successful for attaining power over windsurfing via World Sailing, snowboarding via the International Ski Federation (FIS), and BMX via the International Cycling Union (UCI) – though not without controversy.[37] In fact, it appears that the impetus for these ISFs to grobalize these action sports comes directly from the IOC themselves. In fact, it appears that the impetus for these ISFs to grobalize these action sports comes directly from the IOC themselves. The IOC requested, for example, that the UCI in the first instance[38] and later the International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS, now World Skate after merging with the International Skate Federation) accommodate skateboarding into their Olympic program.[39] In their IOC commissioned report on action sports, Wheaton and Thorpe encourage the IOC to work with action sport ISFs “in contrast to fitting within existing I[S]Fs that may not understand and respect the unique cultural value systems . . . within these sports.”[40] However, the grobalization and appropriation of action sports under the vision of the IOC has continued in recent years despite this call to action. For instance, the controversial merging of FIRS and the International Skate Federation to form World Skate in order to deliver skateboarding at Tokyo 2020,[41] the UCI abandoning work with the International BMX Freestyle Federation now that BMX Park Freestyle is at Tokyo 2020,[42] the lack of support from the IOC for the International Surfing Association (ISA) who were fighting off the encroachment of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) over stand-up-paddleboarding,[43] despite the ICFs lack of history in the activity,[44] and FIGs misappropriation of parkour as a new gymnastic discipline that they initially hoped to take to Paris 2024.[45]" #parkour #parkourearth #wearenotgymnastics
Last year I hosted a roundtable discussion at the Centre for Sociocultural Sport and Olympic Research (CSSOR) conference at California State Fullerton focused on action sports and the Olympic Games (the good, the bad, and the ugly). It was a lively dialogue. A version of this conversation with Belinda Wheaton Neftalie Williams, PhD Dr Damien Puddle Molly Frizzell & Douglas Booth has just been published in the Journal of Olympic Studies. Herein we share our different views and insights on the politics and potential of action sports inclusion into the Olympic programme:
