This interview 8 years ago left a deep impression in me. It was the 45th St Gallen Symposium when Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the then Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance of Singapore was grilled by Stephen Sackur, Presenter, BBC. He spoke about the important factor in Singapore's success and what freedom means for Singapore. For every response he provided, the presenter posed challenging questions. However, he handled each unexpected inquiry with intelligence, finesse, and ease, rendering the sharp-tongued presenter momentarily speechless. Here's an excerpt that was just brilliant. (BBC) Do you believe in the concept of a safety net? We believe in a concept of support for people taking up opportunities. So we don't have unemployment. BBC interviewer: I believe in the sometimes simplicity of yes-or-no answers. What about this idea of a safety net for those who fall between the cracks of a successful economy? Mr Tharman: I believe in the notion of trampoline (BBC) So people are just bouncing up and down in Singapore? “𝗡𝗼, 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁. If you provide help for someone who is willing to study hard; if you provide help for someone who is willing to take up a job and work at it, and make life not so easy if you stay out of work; if you provide help for someone who wants to own a home — and we are very generous in our grants for home ownership, which is why we have 90 per cent home ownership and, among the low-income population, more than 80 per cent own their homes — 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. His response was truly outstanding, demonstrating his ability to remain steadfast when confronted with difficult questions and his capacity for independent thought. He possesses a unique blend of emotional intelligence, a proven history of public service, a wide-ranging intellect, the capability to navigate intricate situations, and a respected global reputation. Particularly in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions and other challenges, Mr Tharman's presence will undoubtedly bolster the security, credibility, and long-term viability of Singapore and the Asian region. Given his stature and competence, he will reshape the Presidency’s influence and have a meaningful impact on the global stage.
