What a joy to connect with Beverley Samways over our shared beliefs and pursuits! It's affirming to find someone thinking about self-injury, families, and disability in a similar way from a different corner of the world. Beverley is founder of Unique Connections (uniqueconnections.org.uk), a nonprofit specializing in supporting individuals with self-injury and disability from a trauma-informed perspective. As you'll see in our full conversation on the Unique Connections Youtube page, this is an unusual and much-needed approach. We discuss my recent publication, "Self-injurious behavior in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: An interdisciplinary family systems review," which is available open access in the Journal of Family Theory and Review.
Self-injury specialist; founder of Unique Connections; researcher with UoB and Churchill Fellow 2023/4
Earlier this month I got to spend some time with Dr Caroline Roberts from Minnesota University. She is a self-injury researcher, with a focus on family systems. We got talking about relationships, systems, attachment, and, most joyous of all, shared humanity. You can check out the conversation here: https://lnkd.in/eNz54PKR

Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., is an advocate and ally who, throughout his tenure as @National Institutes of Health Director, acted to improve the careers of women in science. He says that greater commitment from leaders of biomedical institutions, backed by actions, and a greater understanding of the many roles and responsibilities #WomenInScience must juggle are needed to increase the opportunity for women’s advancement into #STEMM leadership roles. Such an interesting study demonstrating how "anti-wokeness" is not rooted in fairness but instead rooted in anti-Black/POC biases that people hold (whether acted on intentionally or not). Important to consider how framing around DEI training therefore may need to be tailored for "anti-woke" members of the workforce, including in healthcare contexts.
Check out the piece that Mikki Hebl, Laura Brooks Dueland, PhD, and I published in The Conversation!
Conservative opponents of DEI may not be as colorblind as they claim

Author, Photographer & Researcher of Faces of Resilience: Global Stories of Women's Trauma and Recovery
In 2003, I conducted ethnographic field research in a remote community in Brazil, focusing on issues of identity, racism, and the exclusion of marginalized populations. This woman, whose hands and face have seen the passing of time and resilience, is part of the rich cultural narrative that I was privileged to document. Her story, like many others, reveals how deeply intertwined cultural identity and systemic exclusion are, especially in rural and underrepresented communities. As I look back on this work, I see how it has shaped my understanding of resilience and trauma—insights that have carried over into my current project, "Faces of Resilience," where I continue to explore the intersections of culture, trauma, and recovery in diverse populations around the world. This journey, from Brazil to today, underscores the importance of giving voice to those who have been silenced or overlooked, and the power of storytelling in shaping a more inclusive and empathetic world.

TEDxYouth Speaker, Community Youth Citizen of the Year, Minderoo Intern, Civic Engagement YAG, Carers WA YAG, VCI Ambassador, National SWAN Sibling Ambassador, Carer/Disadvantaged Youth Advocate, Passionate Change-Maker
With the WA State Government updating their Youth Action Plan, Valuing Children Initiative suggested that their #ambassadors may like to contribute an expressive piece of artwork or writing, communicating their perspectives. Having contributed extensively late last year to the #YouthAction Plan consultation by providing my thoughts and perspectives on the priorities of youth, through #forum participation and online survey completion, this task appealed to me immensely! I immediately began summarising the priotities I had raised in the survey and forum last year - #climatechange, #youthmentalhealth services (particularly emergency/after-hours), youth #unemployment, #childpoverty, #lgbtqia and #genderdiversity, #costoflivingcrisis, #homelessness, #firstnations voices, #regionaldevelopment, #disabilityinclusion and #youngcarers. Each and every one of these issues I have either observed first-hand, is extremely close to my heart and/or I have personally experienced. These sentiments in the poem were expressed passionately and from a position of genuine insight and awareness. I am not a talented poet, by any means. Mathematics is by far my preferred, and stronger, subject over English! Nevertheless, I sincerely hope that my emotive words of desperation outlining many of the increasingly insurmountable issues young people are currently facing, resonate with policy makers and are taken into consideration, along with the priorities communicated by other young people consulted. I must take this opportunity to applaud both the WA State Government, as well as the Federal Government, for their increasing introduction of #initiatives in which #diverse, young #perspectives are actively being sought. I personally have seen the introduction of an increasing number of programs in which young people are being shown that their opinions matter through generous financial remuneration and the provision of travel expenses, tools to facilitate content creation and implementation of other such measures.
