Tesla's collaboration with Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has been pivotal in advancing electric vehicle (EV) technology. CATL supplies Tesla with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, known for their cost-effectiveness and safety, though they offer less range compared to other chemistries. This partnership has enabled Tesla to produce more affordable EVs, particularly in the Chinese market. However, CATL's founder, Robin Zeng, has expressed skepticism about Tesla's focus on 4680 cylindrical cell technology, predicting potential challenges in its implementation. Despite these differing perspectives, the collaboration between Tesla and CATL continues to play a significant role in the evolution of battery technologies within the EV industry. #Tesla #CATL #EVBattery

Robin Zeng on Tesla's 4680 Battery Technology: A Bold Prediction @Robin Zeng, founder of the world's largest EV battery company CATL, recently shared his strong views on Tesla's 4680 cylindrical cell technology, suggesting it "is going to fail and never be successful." In an interview with Reuters, Zeng revealed that he and Tesla CEO Elon Musk engaged in a significant debate during Musk's visit to China earlier this year. According to Zeng, Musk was left "silent" when he demonstrated the limitations, stating, "He doesn’t know how to make a battery." Tesla's 4680 "tabless" cells, which are featured in some of its cars like the Cybertruck, claim to offer five times more energy capacity. In fact, Tesla recently announced it had produced 100 million of these cells. However, challenges remain, with reports suggesting that Musk has set a year-end deadline to address cost and performance issues. Meanwhile, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited continues to dominate the battery market with its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which power everything from Tesla vehicles in China to Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning in North America. While LFP batteries may offer less range compared to Tesla’s cylindrical cell units, CATL’s presence in the global EV market remains strong. https://lnkd.in/e_6QBvua MOVE: Mobility Re-imagined

Tesla is taking new steps to reign in costs while the company redirects its focus to #ai and #autonomy. New team lead for the 4680 #battery Bonne Eggleston has set a goal of lowering production cost of the cylindrical cells below that of #oemsuppliers #panasonic or #lges . Key to achieving that goal will be abandoning the dry coating process and outsourcing cathodes when needed. This is another significant departure from #tesla ‘s previous strategy of controlling costs by reinventing the #manufacturing process. The dry coating of the cathode eliminates the use of solvents and time spent drying, or curing the cathode layers prior to assembly. Tesla’s shift away from a focus on #electricvehicle assembly now includes the 4680 battery cell in addition to curtailing production advances with #gigapress technology and the Supercharging network being virtually eliminated. #automotiveindustry #ev #evs #automobilindustrie #batterymanufacturing #forecasting #autoforecastsolutions https://lnkd.in/ebtQYDM4
