Frequent visits to oil palm plantations are leading to a sharp increase in mortality rates among infant southern pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) in the wild - prolonged exposure to oil palm plantations during infancy tripled the likelihood of infant mortality. This key finding could be explained by increased encounters with predators and humans and potential exposure to harmful chemicals such as pesticides in this environment. https://lnkd.in/gnVG5Aef

This puts a strain on the healthcare system and can result in decreased access to important medicines for local communities. Additionally, the loss of biodiversity disrupts traditional knowledge and practices around herbal medicine, impacting the ability of African societies to maintain their cultural heritage and reliance on natural resources for healthcare. The protection and conservation of biodiversity are crucial to ensuring the continued availability of herbal medicines in African societies. Efforts to protect and sustainably manage natural resources are needed to maintain the vital connection between biodiversity and traditional medicine in African communities. #biodiversity #natureconservation

🌊📚 Dive into the latest halibut research! HSWRI scientists have been examining how water temperature early in life influences California halibut sex determination. A recent laboratory study using cultured halibut showed that 15°C (59°F) was needed for a 1:1 male to female sex ratio. 🌡️ Warmer temperatures produced a greater number of males than females. 🔬 These findings are significant for the future of aquaculture.
