What a panel to close the #IFAT2024 in Munich and draw some conclusions around “The future of living - adapting to the results of climate change”! The usual noise of a busy exhibition hall was barely noticeable, because two top experts were invited to speak about this topic, reflecting on #Urbanization and #Cities. Prof. Dr. Ian Goldin ( https://lnkd.in/dC7DMzyZ) gave the first keynote and spoke about the impact of inequality, social division, and climate change on cities. Despite these threats and challenges, Golding stressed that we must celebrate cities as source of creativity, hope, and potential. For that it is important to do things in new ways and develop technologies and the engineering to enable us to do that. Very intersting to hear that Germany and Japan have developed a healthy and globally unmatched decentralization, not being so dependant on mega cities, rather powerful regions. Daniel Libeskind (https://lnkd.in/d5azsvT4) then gave us his reasoning for designing iconic buildings and places in cities like New York, Berlin, Dresden, and Milano. He made it clear, why cities need open places where people meet, where culture and arts are developed, and how city architecture and urban planning can reflect on history, presence, and future. I asked Goldin, how important proximity, and density of people in cities still is for innovation, in times where digitalization enables remote collaboration. Based on research he answered that significant innovations still need people to be closely together. And that‘s why cities will not lose their role as powerhouses of economy and creativity. The 75 minutes just flew by. “Water-sensitive Urban Design” or “Waterwise City Development” emphasizes how important it is to timely include many domains in creating Cities of the Future. Just last week I was part of a great virtual panel discussion (see reference in comment) where we all agreed on how important it is for Cities to take a holistic development approach, evolve from a domain perspective and involve all relevant experts and stakeholders early on, work with a growth mindset and collaborate across disciplines. And I made the point that we have the tool to do this today: the urban Digital Twin is the virtual roundtable where data from various contributors is merged to support collaboration across the asset lifecycle. This week at the #IFAT2024 fair in Munich, I heard from a case in Germany from Anja Neumann and Anke Gebhard, featured by DWA Deutsche Vereinigung für Wasserwirtschaft, Abwasser und Abfall. It's called Zukunftsinitiative Klima.Werk, where many cities of the Emscher-Lippe region and the Emschergenossenschaft / Lippeverband are working together to advance the green-blue conversion of municipalities in the Ruhr area. More water and greenery in our cities and less sealed areas! Climate change adaption has to become a guiding principle in all aspects of urban development to advance urban infrastructure for a better quality of life. #smartinfrastructure #smartcities #digitaltwins #infrastructureintelligence #bentleysystems Dr. Lisa Broß Tom Freyberg Will Sarni Sandra DiMatteo Cecília Correia Jo Knight Dustin Parkman Rodrigo Fernandes

Super nice to see progress in Siemensstadt Square: the laying of the foundation stone as the next step to develop of one of Europe’s largest urban redevelopment sites. Looking forward to seeing and finally experiencing how digital innovations can transform a historical industrial site. Even nicer that Siemens Infrastructure's technologies will help to shape this carbon neutral urban district, e.g. with #DigitalTwin technology, #BuildingManagement systems and #EV charging.
Siemensstadt Square will not only benefit Berlin. Our digitally designed, carbon-neutral city district offers a blueprint for urban development everywhere. And today, we were honored to have German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with us as we laid the foundation stone. Siemens is investing €750M in the modernization of Siemensstadt Square, and technologies from the Siemens Xcelerator platform are driving the development. Siemensstadt Square will be the digital, sustainable, competitive city of the future. We look forward to welcoming our first residents, visitors, and partners next year. HOW EUROPE CAN RESHAPE ITS CITIES TO BOOST VIBRANCY,RESILIENCE AND CLIMATE ACTION. Most people assume that European cities are vibrant cultural hubs with buildings already set in stone. While there is some truth in this, Europe’s urban areas urgently need action to maintain their vibrancy and address climate and resource challenges. Low-density expansion and denser city centers are creating inefficiencies and imbalances, threatening Europe’s urban identity. Inequality in living space is rising, and many cities face housing crises or under-occupancy. Improving urban forms is essential for Europe’s climate goals, such as a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Efficient and balanced space use can halve construction emissions and reduce urban mobility emissions, freeing up land for green spaces. This can alleviate extreme temperatures, saving lives. Urban transitions to smarter space use are low-tech and can be applied today, inspired by cities like Freiburg, Zurich, and Barcelona. Europe's cohesion funds, the New European Bauhaus, and initiatives like NetZeroCities support urban transformations. However, these initiatives often overlook the potential of better space use. It’s time to revive Europe’s urban DNA of vibrancy, connectivity, and diversity, making efficient space use a central agenda for investors, planners, and policymakers. For more insights, check SYSTEMIQ's white paper on efficient and balanced space use, which challenges policymakers and investors to innovate and design sustainable cities for the future. Let’s discuss how we can drive this transformation together. #UrbanDevelopment #ClimateAction #SustainableCities #Europe #UrbanPlanning #GreenSpaces #EfficientLiving #NetZeroCities #SmartCities #Sustainability #UrbanInnovation
