Nurturing not Knackering! Expert in Residential Construction build and safety - Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Constructors

Hi LinkedIn Peeps! Sooty and sweep are feeling bashful today. I have been involved in several discussions on LinkedIn over the last few days about competency! Competency is about understanding your own limits and abilities in my opinion. It's not a case of fake it until you make it in my profession. Section 7 of the H&S at Work Act talks about taking care of ourselves and that of other people. Misrepresenting your competency is an offence under section 7 in my opinion. We use the acronym SKATE in Health and Safety training to illustrate the elements that are required to make up competency. SKILL KNOWLEDGE ATTITUDE TRAINING EXPERIENCE Portal Safety & Training Services mentor towards competency on site via our training and site visits. We can add value to your company and individual competencies. #training #nebosh #safety #npors #justthatbitbetter Rick Theaker CMIOSH

Studies show those at most risk are in employment for 6 months prior to being most at risk. In the earlier months they are monitored, as this drops off they gain belief in themselves and are more likely to take risks to show how useful they are to the organisation to “ get the job done”. Once past the 12 month mark, they feel “ secure” and are less likely to try and impress, hence being more competent and more likely to adhere to policies and procedures. I’ll pop in soon and show you some interesting data.

Great video Rick and so so true too many people especially when they are new try and take on too much, no one knows everything and if something is out of your wheelhouse then seek external support. Lots of accidents occur due to poor and non competent advice being given
