Does this matter to you? I Had a great conversation with a hiring manager last week regarding some resistance candidates are showing to working in a specialised niche. This got me thinking, in an area like client services where you are not as close to the work as say designers or social media managers, how important is the sector or discipline you work in? Some of the explanations I've heard are super interesting: Passion: We've all heard the age old saying of love your work and you'll never work a day in your life. So if your passions lie in FMCG or in Visual design, why would you want to work anywhere else? Market knowledge: In Client services, having the ability to have strategic conversations with your client is crucial, along with being able to advise your team on the work they are producing. Having knowledge of your sector is a massive tool in your arsenal. Could you do your role with minimal knowledge of the sector or discipline? Growth Opportunities: Markets that are high-flying are obviously going to be a lot more attractive to client services professionals as there is more opportunity there. However the chance to revive a quieter sector could be an exciting challenge! Are you selective on the sector or discipline you work in? Would you pivot to something new for the right opportunity? WEDNESDAY WISDOM: There's no perfect candidate. Sometimes employers need to take a chance on talent, you never know, you may hire the next David Ogilvy. That candidate that you think is too old has the potential to be one of your most loyal employees and will bring a level of experience, wisdom and work ethic that is hard to compete with. That Creative that had to give up their dream due to personal circumstances a few years ago, is still a creative at heart, can still bring to life new ideas and still has the skill set they studied to write copy or create overall design. They just need someone to give them a chance. That Account Director who was an athlete in college, blogs about sports in their free time but has worked on non-sports brands their entire career can sometimes have more drive than those with current sports marketing experience and can bring a passion to the role that would inspire his whole team. There is no such thing as the perfect candidate. And if they're out there, they may not want your job. As a recruiter I'm hired to find candidates with the "exact" experience required for the role. Sometimes candidates will not have the "exact" experience but they have what we refer to as "transferable skills". When that's coupled with a candidate that is so motivated to get their "foot in the door" that they are willing to take a cut in salary, relocate, start from the bottom and their enthusiasm for the vertical or industry is infectious....hire them! They could be the next David Ogilvy. Ogilvy dropped out of college, had no marketing experience, had never written a word of copy at the age of 38 but had an unwavering determination to get into advertising. Someone took a chance on him and he became known as "The Father of Advertising". Stepping out of the agency shadows and into the client-side spotlight. 💡💡💡 You've honed your skills on the agency side - fast-paced, team-oriented, and creative. But now, it's time for a change. It's a marathon, not a sprint. You have a chance to delve deeper and make a larger impact. 🏃🏃♂️🏃♀️ 4️⃣ Finally, build your brand knowledge. Learn everything about the brand you're joining - its history, values, customers, and competitors. Know it inside out, because your job is to live and breathe it. 👨🎓👩🎓 Transitioning from agency to client-side isn't a walk in the park, but it's a transformative journey. It's about shifting perspectives, refining skills, and embracing new challenges. Ready to make the leap? Start by looking at your career objectively, particularly the types of clients you've worked with. See any patterns? If you have tonnes of experience in Automotive (for example), champion this in your resume/portfolio, and start approaching Automotive brands for your next role. Want to know a great way to build skills and get hired in marketing when you don’t have decades of experience? A lot of highly skilled candidates find it hard to put out applications when there’s so much competition, and it can often feel like there’s a huge amount of weight on number of years worked. I had a coffee chat with a hiring manager from Coca Cola recently. He told me a story about a hire they were making in social media. They had two candidates. The first looked great on paper. Years of experience. Relevant jobs. They could do the job for sure. The second was less conventional. Less marketing experience. Lower credentials. What they did have? 100K followers, great engagement, and gorgeous content. The manager ultimately decided to trust what was on paper. Until their immediate supervisor disagreed with the decision. They picked the less experienced candidate. Why? The second candidate, with an incredibly strong personal brand, proved that they understood effective branding. The second candidate proved that they single-handedly understood how to engage an audience and hold attention. The second candidate proved that they were highly skilled at videography, scripting, photoshop, and copywriting through the production of their own videos. Moral of the story: a strong personal brand is an opportunity to prove your skills in depth. I did not expect that I would learn so much about myself professionally and personally through my thesis. Having intended on doing research on visual disabilities and design to then do a 180 turn, thanks to our classes' contents, and instead explore ways in which companies, specifically ad agencies, can improve their internal set-ups and processes for creative employees to thrive and have more time for conceptualization felt both expected and unexpected to me. My job experiences really shaped this thesis into existence, as even the participant interviewees here in Berlin confirmed that the project rush can is often the most meaningful obstacle for employees' creative performance. I have now discovered roles such as Process Analyst, Process Manager or Controller, Process Designer, Creative Operations, and Client Manager, which all sound like great next positions to prepare myself for and approach for my career to help advertising agencies retain their creative talents. Advertising needs some changes and new roles in its midst, and theses positions can lower the burdens and barriers for workplace creativity significantly. #adagency #creativeagency #creativeoperations
