It was a profound honor to contribute to Senator Markey’s D.C. office this summer. He is the progressive champion we need on the environment and energy. I am deeply grateful to his office for a truly transformative experience and for introducing me to an undaunted and forward-thinking approach to public policy. During my internship with the communications team, I acquired critical insights into how key figures shape public discourse around the urgent need for bold action on climate. Rising sea levels, wildfires, and environmental degradation threaten our livelihoods. The Green New Deal, a vital solution, is not just important but necessary because there is no “Planet B.” Collaborating with the press team, I learned how to generate media coverage effectively, track stories, pitch ideas, and draft quotes. The digital team also allowed me to take photos at a Climate Change Task Force hearing chaired by Sen. Markey. They demonstrated the combination of emotion, brevity, and multimedia that forms the backbone of digital content. Moreover, the office fostered a stimulating atmosphere that inspired my cohort of interns to reframe policymaking by imagining beyond norms and pushing the boundaries of possibility. The staff also embodied politics not as it is but as it should be: elected officials channeling the energy of movements by holding their ground. This model emphasizes that compromise and progress occur by embracing core beliefs rather than blind centrism. This internship has not only confirmed the power of a bold vision but also instilled in me a sense of how to shift the window of opportunity. When wholesale change is not instantly feasible, we must tread the path of incremental progress, as each step brings us closer to our goal. I forever owe Sen. Markey and his office for this new point of view.

Why It Matters
So thrilled to welcome our 2024 MaineHealth and MaineHealth Institute for Research summer interns yesterday at our orientation at MaineHealth corporate headquarters in Portland! We had an incredible day with leaders Scott Ballard, Douglas Sawyer, and Kelly Elkins who shared more about our health system and how our intern's work in their respective departments will positively impact our health system and the communities we serve. Between both groups we have 75 interns from 40 departments across the system this summer–what an engaged group of young professionals who will be helping to make a difference at MaineHealth with their skills and expertise–looking forward to seeing them shine this summer! Special thanks to our speakers along with Liz Bergst, Christine Ellis, Ungara Farris, Joe Baty, Jonathan Delorme, Daphne Backman, Hailey Davis, Justin Marston and others who helped make the day possible.

Intern Spotlight (and birthday shoutout!) for our very own Joshua Weidenfeller. When Joshua's friends ask what he does at work he says that he connects with healthcare leaders and facilitates meaningful conversations that help our team understand how we can best help our partners better understand their patients throughout their care journey. However, during lunch this summer, he found time to have some fun. One of his favorite NRC Health memories was having sandwich-eating competitions with fellow interns. Joshua thanks Business Development Manager, Dillon McKinney as one of his most impactful mentors. "Working on the type of accounts Business Development Executives work on has given me a unique perspective on how large deals come to fruition, and what it takes from a sales professional side to push the deal across the finish line." Joshua's Fun Facts: -His favorite book is Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne. -When he was younger he wanted to become a business owner, not in any specific area. -His favorite thing about going to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is how big the campus is. It is great for walking around, and there are many areas to sit and do homework. #NRCHealthHavePurpose #NRCHealthFeelConnected

#aageconference2024 - Day one reflections! - fascinating session with Prosple reflecting on the over saturation of DEI content for our graduate and intern positions. DEI is your “ticket to ride”, but students want more granular info on the opportunities. Good food for thought. - listening to three global leads in our industry Siobhan Warren, Shanan Green and Stephen Isherwood waxing lyrical about where our industry was at. Heartening (and disheartening in the same breath!) that some of the challenges we face are universal - rapidly increasing application volumes, flattening volumes of roles, leaner budgets. Bring on Day 2!
