In Bad Schönborn, Germany, a silent revolution is taking place on the serene waters of Philippsee Lake. Germany’s largest floating solar power plant, with a capacity of 14.987 MWp, is nearing completion. The balance between #customization and #industrialization is (maybe) not so hard to find! ☀ At #EUBuildings strategy day, organized by SolarPower Europe and SEAMLESS-PV Project, Laura Maturi from Eurac Research discussed the crucial collaboration between the building industry and PV industry and their different needs. 🏗 While mass market production is possible only through industrialization, aesthetically pleasing and successful PV building integration can only be achieved through some customization. 👉 A great collaboration example is INFINITE project, with SUNAGE, IPV manufacturer, and RUBNER, a wood building construction company, working together to develop a new integrated solution. 👉 Another example is #NEST, thanks to which Institute for Renewable Energy – Eurac Research is developing facilities to support IPV manufacturers with PV customization. #PVcustomization #bipv #buildingrenovation

🚀 We are delighted to announce our strategic alliance with STADTwerke Amstetten, an electric utility company based in Amstetten, to monetize their combined BESS and Hydropower plant in the short-term electricity markets. With the integration of the battery energy storage system, Sadtwerke Amstetten will take advantage of their electricity generation and compensate the grid when there is an imbalance. By combining hydropower generation with energy storage technologies such as batteries, hydropower plants can enhance their flexibility and responsiveness to market conditions, capturing additional value from market opportunities. To effectively monetize the hydropower plant in the energy market, it is crucial to understand the dynamics of the power market, the regulatory environment, as well as to optimize the operation of the plant to maximize efficiency and profitability. Christmas came early this year! Together with our consortium partners Wavepiston have secured a €4m Horizon Europe Grant to launch our SHY-project. The SHY-project is aimed at advancing wave energy by developing key components of a seawater hydraulic power-take-off (PTO) system, coupled with an advanced control strategy. This dual focus aims to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) while concurrently minimising the environmental impact. 🌍💨🌞 Balancing Renewable Energy with Pumped Hydro in Norway 🌊💡 This summer, students Jon Kringeland and Iselin Rossebø, participated in Sildikon Valley under the guidance of our member Deep Wind Offshore and Endra. They took on the challenge of balancing renewable energy technologies with pumped hydro in Norway. Their research aimed to develop smart solutions for optimizing the integration of wind and solar energy.   Their findings are quite interesting! They proposed innovative strategies to optimize the integration of wind and solar energy, enhancing stability and reliability. This effort is crucial as the demand for clean energy rises with the global shift away from fossil fuels. 🏠🏢   Key insights include: ✅ Energy Security: Increasing energy security and reducing volatility and maximum prices for both private and public consumers. ✅ Financial Viability: Improving bankability through government subsidies, debt financing, and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). ✅ Energy Storage: Highlighting pumped storage hydropower (PSH) as the most viable option for balancing supply and demand. Their work is set to be the foundation for an upcoming R&D project that will investigate this further as a business case for the sector. DWO is now seeking funding opportunities for this R&D project. 🚀   Students show that real experience leads to real results. New research from Switzerland showed that alpine floating PV systems can outperform lowland or ground-mounted counterparts in terms of energy yield and sustainability. The scientists found that the main material-reduction potential of such floating PV installations lies in the resource-intensive mounting system. Researchers at the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences have analyzed the life cycle environmental impact of the world’s first high-altitude floating PV system and have found it has an energy payback time of just 2.8 years. The 𝟰𝟰𝟴 𝗸𝗪 system was built in 2019 by Swiss energy provider Romande Energie on the surface of Lac des Toules, a reservoir located at an altitude of 1,810 meters in the Swiss Alps. “The installation consists of 35 platforms equipped with bifacial PV panels and measures a total size of 2′240  m2, covering 2 % of the lake surface,” the scientists stressed. “The structure is anchored at the bottom of the reservoir. GRAVITY BATTERY - One of the most fascinating energy storage innovations - as well as a clever use of mine-ridden brownfields to be sure. 🤔But can it live up to the potential of "a novel and promising technology for large-scale energy storage technology"?🤔 (Wenxuan Tong et al., 2022) ⚙️ Gravitricity Ltd, a Scottish company, is repurposing Europe's deep Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland for its first full-scale gravity energy store prototype. 🏗️ The mine, decommissioned in 2022, will house an energy storage system using gravity to raise and lower weights, offering "some of the best characteristics of lithium-ion batteries and pumped hydro storage". 🔄 Excess power, such as from wind turbines, will lift weights up the 530m auxiliary shaft; releasing them turns winches into generators, supplying either a quick burst or a slow trickle of electricity as needed. 🔋 The gravity energy system can store 2MW of power, integrating into the local energy grid, offering a long-term solution for renewable energy storage, according to recent research. 🌐 Abandoned mine shafts worldwide could potentially store up to 70TWh of power, equivalent to global daily electricity consumption. 🚀 The Pyhäjärvi community, in collaboration with Gravitricity, aims to turn the mine into Europe's first Gravistore deployment, creating "low carbon jobs" and revitalizing the region. 🌍 The mine, closed in 2022 after extracting over 60 million tonnes of ore since 1962, is part of various community-driven projects, including a solar farm, tech startups, and an underground 5G network, fostering regeneration.
