Did you know that compost applied to rangelands will continue to increase the soils’ sequestration ability many years into the future with just ONE application! We are field testing whether it has the same effect on landscape systems that don’t contain integrated animals. For now, Bond considers your compost and mulch application as a one-time sequestration credit against your emissions. Do you want to know more? From Land's End to John o'Groats, we've measured farms up and down the country to build a better picture of on-farm environmental impact. One of the most northerly farms to go through Soil Association Exchange features in our latest case study. At Kirkfield Farm, creating a resilient farm for future generations and making space for nature go hand in hand. Read the case study here: https://lnkd.in/epHhFHQ9

My colleague Dominic Kempson describes the growing shift toward using #NatureBasedSolutions (NbS) in this article with Environmental Business Journal. The NbS market is being driven by the rising importance of #biodiversity, a desire to reconnect people with #nature, and a growing recognition of the financial value of natural systems. https://ow.ly/m1O950UKCxI

Pollinator species are essential to our environment and represent a critical building block for the majority of the world’s terrestrial ecosystems. It is no surprise that pollinator protection initiatives have become such hot topic in environmental science. Waterborne's Scientists are involved with pollinator issues from the management of laboratory testing to working with industry on pollinator issues. Will putting a price on nature protect it? At yesterday's event, there was recognition of the limited—and in several cases, harmful—ecological and social impacts of market-based mechanisms like biodiversity offsets, which financialise nature. But something crucial was missing from the discussion. Quick breakdown below with further insights: ➡ Biodiversity offsets: a false assumption These mechanisms often focus on actions rather than outcomes, assuming lost biodiversity can be recreated. However, research shows that ecosystems are inherently complex and cannot be reduced to simple, mappable units (Boitani et al., 2015). Biodiversity cannot be traded across different types, spaces, or times (Walker et al., 2009). No single surrogate—or combination of surrogates—can fully capture biodiversity’s complexity, making the goal of "No Net Loss" fundamentally flawed (BBOP, 2012; Bull et al., 2013; Gardner et al., 2013). ➡ The human cost of financialising nature Socially, these mechanisms tend to benefit market players, while local communities are marginalised. The priorities of those most affected by environmental degradation are often overshadowed by the interests of financial markets. ⚠ The paradox of marketising nature Even if the limitations of biodiversity offsets could be addressed (though strong evidence suggests otherwise), they remain grounded in a paradox: relying on market mechanisms to protect nature makes conservation dependent on the very economic systems and practices it seeks to counteract. Consequently, growth in conservation funding becomes increasingly tied to the expansion of extractive industries, perpetuating the harm it seeks to prevent (Fletcher et al., 2014; Büscher, 2012). 🌞 We need radical reimagination Reimagining biodiversity governance is not only necessary, but possible. We need to look beyond neoliberal market driven models that have consistently fallen short. CONVIVIAL CONSERVATION and multi-species/more-than-human approaches offer valuable alternatives—ways to govern that genuinely prioritise the protection, care, and flourishing of biodiversity. These perspectives open the door to new, more equitable and effective governance. 📚 Some resources to explore: https://lnkd.in/dejbzReW https://lnkd.in/dYWkFPm9 Moral Imaginations https://lnkd.in/dKy6zJyC Some inspiring people and reference points for neoliberal conservation and/or multi-species justice: Bram Büscher Robert Fletcher Phoebe Tickell Danielle Celermajer David Schlosberg #convivialconservation #morethanhuman #multispeciesjustice #interspecies #OtherThanHuman #InterspeciesRelations #DeliberativeDemocracy #MoreThanHumanPolitics #AnimalsInTheRoom #NatureParticipation #whatif?

Our very own Pippa Howard is definitely worth listening to! Hear from Pippa Howard, Chief Nature Strategist, in the latest video from our #NatureIntelligenceViews series. Pippa leads our Nature Strategy team, helping businesses to understand their relationship with nature. Since the launch of new frameworks and regulations such as TNFD (from the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)) and the Global Biodiversity Framework, there has been a real groundswell in the demand for nature strategy. Hear Pippa explain the reasons behind increasing demand and how NatureMetrics is supporting businesses as they get to grips with new requirements.
