Interestingly, #toyota is not the sole player in the Solid-State battery arena; major OEMs such as #vw , #bmw, and Mercedes have already entered the field. QuantumScape, in partnership with #vw, has received investments exceeding $300 million, emphasizing the industry's interest. ProLogium and #mercedesbenz are collaborating on technology development for solid-state battery cells, with ProLogium supplying over 8,000 solid-state battery sample cells for global car manufacturers' testing and module development. SolidPower has also joined forces with BMW for solid-state battery research. Each OEM is exploring diverse materials and technologies. A significant point of contention revolves around the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, which has surged eight-fold from 2008 to 2020. The question arises: do we truly need solid-state batteries if lithium-ion battery density continues to improve consistently? Currently, lithium-ion battery cells can achieve approximately 300Wh/kg or 750 Wh/litre. Solid-state batteries become imperative only if there is a limit to further enhancing lithium-ion batteries, typically between 10% to 25%. Notably, lithium-ion batteries contain up to 25% liquid, whereas solid-state batteries offer enhanced safety due to reduced flammability and improved material safety. Moreover, solid-state batteries can endure up to 10,000 cycles and hold lithium content nearly 80 times higher than #lithium-ion batteries. The possibility of using sodium presents an economical option, given its availability, which is tenfold that of lithium. However, conclusive decisions on solid-state batteries utilizing sodium may require additional time. Regarding recycling, solid-state batteries pose challenges due to their intricate and complex recycling process. Feasibility arises primarily if these batteries are assembled at low temperatures. This ongoing exploration and development underscore the industry's keen interest in solid-state batteries, balancing advancements with practical challenges, and the quest for safer, more energy-dense, and sustainable energy storage solutions. https://lnkd.in/dKUSjfEh #electricvehicle #electricvehiclesarethefuture #batterytechnology #lithiumionbatteries #solidstatebatteries #ev

SAIC to Equip IM Motors EVs with Solid-State Batteries by 2027 Follow me for more technical data :https://lnkd.in/evN3jc94 SAIC Motor Corporation, a leading Chinese automobile manufacturer, has announced plans to equip its subsidiary IM Motors' electric vehicles with solid-state batteries starting in 2027. This move positions SAIC alongside other pioneers like CATL, Toyota, and Nissan, who are also targeting a similar timeline for introducing solid-state batteries into mass production. According to recent reports, SAIC is set to complete its first production line for solid-state batteries next year, with series production beginning in 2026. The first IM Motors models featuring these advanced batteries, boasting an energy density of over 400 Wh/kg, are expected to hit the market in 2027. In comparison, current lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes cap out at around 350 Wh/kg. In the interim, SAIC will introduce semi-solid-state batteries with an energy density exceeding 300 Wh/kg in the IM Motors L6 model this year. These semi-solid-state batteries will be integrated into other SAIC brand vehicles starting in 2025. Solid-state batteries promise enhanced safety and significant cost reductions, with production costs expected to be around 40% lower than those of traditional liquid electrolyte batteries. This development is part of SAIC's broader innovation strategy, which also emphasizes digitalization in vehicles. Additionally, SAIC is expanding its collaborative efforts, having recently signed a contract with Audi to co-develop electric cars, with their first joint model slated for a 2025 release. Earlier this year, Nikkei Asia reported the formation of the China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP), a consortium aimed at advancing the commercialization of solid-state batteries by 2030. This alliance includes major Chinese battery and car manufacturers such as CATL, CALB, EVE Energy, SVOLT, Gotion High-Tech, and BYD’s FinDreams Battery, along with several state-owned and private automotive companies. While SAIC's involvement in CASIP has not been explicitly confirmed, the consortium represents a significant effort to maintain China's leadership in electric vehicle battery technology. CATL, a prominent member of CASIP, plans to produce pure solid-state batteries in limited quantities by 2027, underscoring the nation's strategic push to stay ahead in this critical technological domain. #SolidStateBatteries #ElectricVehicles #SAIC #IMMotors #BatteryTechnology #Innovation #EVRevolution #SustainableMobility

Solid-state batteries are a hot topic in the #EV world, and many automakers are already looking ahead to 2025, when this technology is expected to hit the mass market. 🔋 But what's all the hype about? Most importantly, #SolidState batteries are expected to deliver a longer lifespan, improved vehicle range, and lower flammability compared the lithium-ion batteries that are currently the industry standard. This has major implications for consumer confidence in electric vehicles. 🚗 Chemists are still working to overcome performance challenges, especially under hot conditions, and improve durability. Other new #battery technologies such as sodium are also competing for market share, which could impact the short-term price and uptake. Regardless of which battery you're betting on, more European investment in solid-state and other technologies is a good thing. As we've learned, a resilient supply of batteries is crucial for the transition to clean energy. And Europe, via the European Battery Alliance (EBA250), has made great strides in creating a competitive battery value chain - we at EIT InnoEnergy are heavily involved.
