You know what I love about trucking? I love having a clean truck. I love when my home time is consistent and as agreed on. I love when the work I put in matches my paycheck. I love when I can get a hot steamy shower and relax. I love when I can patronize a free parking truck stop. I love keeping my CDL violation free. I love keeping the legal binder organization and updated. I love making sure all legal expectations are followed. I love blowing the air horn for kids. I love helping stranded vehicles change tires. I love taking a 5 foot bear in my passenger seat occasionally. I love locking my trailer, knowing the freight is secured. I love cooking on a small grill during nicer weather. I love keeping my truck maintained and serviced. I love a nice comfortable mattress and 4 pillows. I love home cooked meals and delicous salads. I love taking the initiative to think ahead. I love a nice breeze with the windows open. I love the open road and the beautiful sunsets. I love traveling and seeing new places. I love knowing I’m providing for others. I love visiting friends and family. I love having open communication with dispatch. I love investing money in new items for the truck. I love having cameras mounted outside and running 24/7. I love watching the snow fall, knowing I’m safely parked. I love putting a wreath on the grill for the Christmas season. I love shiny rims, chicken lights and a clean windshield. I LOVE taking pride in my job and feeling accomplished. I love knowing my TPMS system shows my air presssures. I love having my ELD mounted somewhere that makes sense. I love having a tv mounted to watch local shows. I love keeping a second fridge for more food. I love waking up in a new state every day. So, just because I love driving doesn’t mean I’m willing to accept cheap pay, I’ll find love in other things as well, until I’m able to find love again in trucking. Like, owning my own truck! Life is a book, we have many chapters and I’m always starting new chapters and experiences, regardless of what book marks I’ve lost or left behind. Always do what makes you happy, even if you have to change your current path. I can still love driving, and also love other opportunities as well. For those who think “trucking” isn’t for me, I say focus your energy elsewhere, because telling me what isn’t for me is like telling me what food I shouldn’t eat or what clothes I shouldn’t wear. As a truck driver, I’ve been at many trucking companies and personally noticed the three things that never come true. Which are? • Pay! • Correct hometime! • Level of acceptable equipment maintenance. I wanted to share something to ponder on! If those trucking companies that constantly “say” they are “great” as part of the hiring propaganda, wouldn’t there be a waiting list of drivers interested already? Meaning there would be zero need to recruit, word of mouth and how excellent a company is would have drivers waiting for an opening. Like a restaurant that offers good service during thanksgiving, the line is out the door! Instead of currently how it is, begging for a truck driver to become interested by saying (all talk) how “great” a place is and spending an hour leading a driver on a wild goose chase of lies? I’m not sure about you, but I’m not going to be begged into drinking a glass of sour milk, or bread that’s stale, or eggs that have mold on them. I’d rather find out how great the company is myself, not a bunch of lies and BS! Show me how great it is by ACTIONS. Don’t sell me on the house on the beach as a “great” vacation spot, that’s already flooded. I’ll find out it’s flooded when I go to look at it, no sense lying about it. I mean, it’s just a thought. Perhaps the truth…. Focus on actually being great, not just saying it’s “great”. How does a company become great? • Pay EXACTLY what is told during hiring. • Get the driver home EXACTLY as promised. • Maintain the equipment EXACTLY as stated. Also, telling a driver AFTER they become hired that they have to just “deal” with whatever it is, even though that’s not what they were promised is like saying “sorry, I know you ordered steak but I gave you chicken” and to just deal with it. Ya, not gonna work out well I promise! Would you be happy with chicken, when you wanted steak? I’d have to assume the answer would be NO! Why are truck drivers not interested in a particular company, and there’s a bunch of openings? Because the pay and basic offers suck! Yes, they suck! We want BETTER, not DRAMA. We don’t want to explain to our wives constantly why we are gone 280 days a year and can’t pay the mortgage or why the kids can’t have a hot meal every night. ©️Jonathan Hopkins

My Take Hey there Truck Enthusiasts! I've been living and breathing trucks for most of my life. From trucking to working with heavy equipment, mechanical tasks, building, construction, and farming - you name it. When you climb into a truck in the early AM, it's crucial to feel right - positive, happy, and eager to hit the road. A good mood makes a world of difference. It keeps the day enjoyable and safe, steering clear of the frustrations that can make a day not just long, but dangerous. My brother, a wise man once told me something I'll never forget. Back when I was still in school and starting to handle our large farm equipment, he said, "If you're having a bad day, don't operate the equipment. Do something else." This advice isn't just for farming - it's universal. Downtime is a silent killer in any industry. Especially for us in the trucking business, whether you're an owner-operator or part of a large company, downtime is a no-go. It's a fast track to turning your balance sheets red. We've got to be on our game every single day. So, here's my mantra: Come out of the gate happy and ready for action! That’s the secret sauce to being successful in this world of trucking or anything else. Nothing beats that feeling. I always say, "Be prepared." My truck is not just a vehicle; it's a fortress on wheels. Spare parts, hand tools - I pack heavy because being caught unprepared on the road is not an option. How many times have we heard, "Oh, I have one of those back in the shop"? I'm always ready to roll. Leaving the yard with confidence in your truck, that's the ticket. There's nothing like the feeling of driving across those scales, a big grin on your face, headed to the next job.
