Community Energy - Helping to navigate the complex world of grid connections Did you miss our webinar specifically for Community Energy groups earlier this month? Nicola Beverley Pillinger and Pete Aston outlined the main changes that have happened in the world of grid connections over the last 12 months, and how these can affect community-based generation projects. We need sound #StateInterconnectionRules to decarbonize the grid in a way that is cost-effective. Our Local Solar Roadmap study found that a mix of local #solar technologies and utility-scale will save American consumers $473 billion by 2050 compared to utility-scale alone. ☀️ #CleanEnergy integration at all levels of the grid, including local systems for families and businesses, is key to decarbonization. Do you want to see what a #growth industry looks like? Look no further than the grid storage industry, which through September installed as much new #batterystorage capacity in 9 months as it did in all of 2022. With quarter over quarter growth of 27%, the industry set both new quarterly AND annual installation records. And with three more months of activity to fold in, 2023 ushers in a step-change in grid storage market size. This growth is encouraging but challenges remain. Snarled supply chains, lengthy and uncertain permitting regimes, and bloated and time-intensive interconnection queues, among other issues, threaten to throttle growth in this industry. And the timing is unfortunate as grids are witnessing a return to demand growth and resource adequacy concerns rise in the face of extreme weather and supply/demand mismatches. Discover more about what trends are shaping the energy storage market in the latest Energy Storage Monitor from the American Clean Power Association (ACP) and Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables https://lnkd.in/g-5ygu6v

Interconnection reform is key to accelerating the build out of #solar and #storage. The Solar and Storage Industries Institute's latest whitepaper proposes solutions aimed at lowering costs and reducing backlogs. “America’s ability to reach our climate goals starts and ends with how efficiently we can get projects connected to the grid. The interconnection process is a black box with unknown wait times and costs for clean energy developers. We need the solutions detailed in SI2’s report to serve growing demand for electricity with reliable, low-cost solar and storage." — Abby Hopper, president and CEO of SEIA. The U.S. grid is undergoing a significant transformation, with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) including solar panels and wind turbines playing an increasingly pivotal role. How can these individual, often small-scale power sources plan to effectively participate in the energy market? Enter DER aggregators. Alex Lago explores the realm of DER aggregators in his latest article with the Utility Analytics Institute (UAI). https://lnkd.in/gjxb7mqe #GridInnovation #DERs #EnergyTransition #utilityanalytics

Critics of MN’s community solar program often say the program serves too many “commercial” subscribers. What they aren’t telling you is “commercial” subscribers include public schools, higher education institutions, & local governments—like the City of Winona who will lose over $2 million if the MN PUC approves an Xcel Energy proposal to retroactively change 25-year contracts. An even larger concern: what chilling effect would such a decision have on clean energy deployment more broadly as investors & financiers can’t trust that contracts will be honored in MN? #solar #solarenergy #cleanenergy

Cool article! Nice to see the different dispatch strategies and the grid resilience. Will definitely dig deeper to find the frequency response behind these swings. Especially for Texas given the higher renewable penetration!
The April 8th solar eclipse provides a fascinating case study in grid resilience! Charts below show how California and Texas experienced different impact and responded appropriately to the temporary drop in solar generation between 12:20PM and 3:00PM central time zone. California: Experienced a modest 3GW solar production drop. This was entirely offset by battery storage with no additional support from natural gas generation. Texas: Faced a more significant 12.6 GW solar slump. Natural gas ramped up to fill the gap, with batteries providing a modest 1.4 GW. This event highlights the importance of a diverse energy mix. Batteries offer rapid response, while natural gas provides sustained power when renewable output dips. #solareclipse #gridresilience #energystorage

📣 Shout it from the rooftops y'all. The clock is ticking on full 1 to 1 net metering rates for FirstEnergy customers. After a months-long battle with the out-of-state monopoly utility, we finally have certainty about the future of solar in West Virginia. The good news is-- it's here to stay... But to maximize your solar savings, you've got to commit by the end of this year. #SolarHoller #MineTheSun #SolarSaves
