Here's a concrete solution to alleviate the crisis at the US border: End the tyranny of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. NOW! This Sunday, Maduro shamelessly declared himself the winner of the presidential election despite losing 70% of the votes to the opposition candidate. People began taking to the streets in outrage. The unrest is escalating rapidly and will likely end with thousands of civilian deaths and incarcerations if the regime prevails. But... here's why this matters to the US. Fifteen years of Maduro's narco-dictatorship led to an economic collapse and a dismantling of civic institutions. This led to 8 million people leaving Venezuela out of desperation in the last decade. Yes, you read it right... 8 million! To give you an order of magnitude -- that's about 1/3 of the nation's population. Gone. Poof! And, hundreds of thousands of them keep piling up at the US border, seeking asylum from this psychopath. The crisis at the US border will only worsen if Maduro prevails. We can't afford to let this happen. Here's to a free Venezuela! https://lnkd.in/efqdTqZ3

Police: Focusing on Constructive Engagement over Repression The recent arrest and subsequent transfer of 76 suspects, including a foreigner, for allegedly flying Russian flags during the nationwide hunger protest in Kano State have raised significant concerns about the approach being taken by the Nigeria Police Force. While the protests led to unfortunate incidents of violence and destruction, it is crucial to recognize that these actions were driven by deep-seated frustrations and legitimate grievances of the Nigerian people. The protests were not just about flying flags; they were a desperate cry for change in the face of widespread hardship. The core issues that fueled these protests—rising hunger, exorbitant fuel prices, and the lack of meaningful opportunities for the youth—remain unresolved. The energy and resources currently being directed towards prosecuting citizens for sedition would be better spent addressing the root causes of the unrest. Are East African Parliaments Listening to Citizens? 🗣️ Yesterday, I had the privilege of moderating an important conversation at the 23rd edition of #CEPAConvo (A biweekly digital Town hall meeting on X) on the topic, "Evidence or Politics: Are #EastAfricanParliaments Listening to Citizens?" This conversation comes in light of the recent #SautizaWananchi 2013-2023 report by Twaweza East Africa that paints a worrying picture of citizens' dissatisfaction across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. 🌍 More than 55% of Ugandans and Kenyans surveyed feel that their living conditions are dire, with 52% of Kenyans and 48% of Ugandans believing their countries are heading in the wrong direction. In Tanzania, once seen as a bastion of hope, public confidence has sharply declined since 2021. The discussion underscored a key concern: Is political interest overshadowing evidence-based policymaking in East Africa? Despite available research and expert insights, decisions by parliaments seem increasingly driven by political agendas, sidelining data and public consultation. This conversation is more urgent now than ever. Public frustration is manifesting in youth-led protests and movements, demanding better governance, economic opportunities, and accountability. 🗳️ It's time for East African parliaments to align political decisions with evidence-based research and truly listen to their citizens. Only then can we move towards sustainable, inclusive development. Let’s continue this critical conversation. #TheCEPAConvo

Is Georgia the next Ukraine? A must-read article whether one is pro-West or East The West is correct to criticize the Georgian NGO law (though we should remember that most Americans would consider it absolutely intolerable if foreign institutions, especially ones linked to foreign states, played the leading part in funding de facto political groups within the U.S.). However, Western governments and NGOs should be very careful not to allow condemnation of the law and sympathy for protests against it to become support for efforts actually aimed at overthrowing the elected Georgian government. https://lnkd.in/ec8nBGzE

The trajectory in #Nigeria is following the same pattern as in the rest of the West #Africa. Initially, small but potent protests, quickly turned deadly, broke out over economic mismanagement, including but not limited to Insecurity (Kidnapping, Killings, cattle rustling, Boko Haram, unknown gunmen etc), Corruption, High cost of living ,Heavy tax, Fuel Subsidy removal. The president's speech failed to address these grievances, and the protests became much more forceful and violent and spread, like bushfire, all over the country, particular to the North. Increasingly, Nigerians are calling for #Putin's intervention. Is a full-on uprising with the coup against the sitting government and a pro-Russian change next?

Venezuelan Crisis Deepens as Opposition Claims Election Fraud and Protests Surge Opposition leader María Corina Machado has called for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to acknowledge his defeat following his disputed re-election, which she claims was fraudulent. 🌍 Struggle in Europe: Protests in Georgia, Serbia, and Slovakia Reveal Common Challenges ✊ As December 2024 unfolds, streets across Georgia, Serbia, and Slovakia are filled with citizens demanding justice and democracy. Despite unique contexts, shared grievances emerge: Slovakia: Protesters in Bratislava oppose PM Fico’s alignment with Putin and "shady" Russian energy deals, sparking outrage over compromised sovereignty and dependency on Russian gas. Serbia: Novi Sad protests, chanting "corruption kills," erupted after an infrastructure collapse killed 15. Allegations of negligent public works and opaque procurement deepen public anger. Georgia: Massive protests decry falsified elections and Putin’s puppet Ivanishvili, accused of steering Georgia into Russia’s sphere via hybrid war tactics. Amnesty International reports torture, mass arrests, and repression during peaceful protests for EU aspirations. Shared Issues: Lack of transparency, corruption, and state repression unite these movements, underscoring the global demand for justice and governance by the people, for the people. #Protests #Transparency #Accountability #Democracy #Change #Georgia #Serbia #Slovakia

Nigerian protesters' defiance of President Tinubu's request to stop demonstrations amidst the country's worst cost-of-living crisis in years underscores the depth of public discontent and mistrust in government. The persistence of protests despite the president's plea highlights the failure of his administration to address the economic woes and provide tangible solutions. As Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of soaring prices, unemployment, and poverty, the government's inability to alleviate their suffering erodes its legitimacy. The Nigerian government must obey the constitution, and live up to its provision about the prioritization of the citizens’ welfare and wellbeing as the fundamental duty of the government. Nigeria's economic turmoil is exacerbated by the profligacy of the political class and its people's quest for better living conditions is legitimate and doable if the government is more accountable. #EndBadGovernance #NigeriaProtests #CostOfLivingCrisis #EconomicHardship #Tinubu #GovernmentFailure #PublicDiscontent #EconomicTurmoil #Africa #ProtestContinues #Accountability #EndBadGovernance https://lnkd.in/eecPic4B
