The financial impact of incarceration extends beyond the individual to the entire community. When a significant portion of a community's population is incarcerated, it results in a loss of productive workforce and a decrease in economic activity. Moreover, the burden of supporting incarcerated individuals falls on taxpayers, who bear the costs of maintaining prisons and providing services to inmates. This diverts resources that could otherwise be used for education, healthcare, and other community development initiatives. The correlation between the justice system and economic stability highlights the urgent need for reform. By addressing the financial consequences of incarceration, we can create a more equitable system that promotes economic stability for individuals and communities alike. Ngarrindjeri woman Felicity Chafer-smith is featured in today's Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News which discusses The Torch and Closing the Gap targets. The latest Closing the Gap data shows four targets, including adult incarceration, are going backwards, but there has been some incremental positive change. The Productivity Commission says the government needs to focus on working with First Nations-led community organisations to help improve outcomes. Rates of incarceration among First Nations adults are disproportionately high and getting worse, as confirmed in the latest update to Closing the Gap targets published on Wednesday. The Closing the Gap target is to lower the rate of incarceration to 15 per cent by 2031, but it's one of four targets that are not just off track, but moving in the wrong direction. It’s #InternationalWomensDay and #WomensHistoryMonth and we want to take this time to shine the light on the facts of the impact of incarceration on women: • Women are more likely to experience trauma or severe psychological distress but are less likely to have access to services during incarceration and when they re-enter society. • Women are more likely to enter incarceration with a medical problem or serious mental illness. They are disproportionately kept in jails vs. prison which limits their access to healthcare or mental health services. • Women are more likely to be jobless (53%) than to be employed in the month before their arrest. • Over a quarter of women (26%) experienced homelessness in the year before the arrest that led to their incarceration — a higher rate than among men (16%). Project Return provides services including housing, health and mental health referrals, wrap-around support, and programing for women inside and outside prison walls. Can you imagine how the world has changed during even a few years of incarceration? It is critical that we use technology to prepare justice-impacted individuals for the new world they are entering. Business and personal applications are changing rapidly and ‘must do’ functions, like virtual career fairs, and on-line job applications, will be insurmountable challenges if we don’t have behind bars instruction

The rate of suicide among Indigenous Australians is increasing, as is the rate of children in out-of-home care, according to the latest Closing the Gap report released by the Productivity Commission. Five targets show improvement but are not on track, Progress on four is worsening. One has shown no change from the baseline. The target of a 15% reduction in adult incarceration by 2031 is not on track. Indigenous young people continue to be over-represented in the criminal justice system, with no progress.

According to the County of San Diego's Equity Indicator Report, there are significant discrepancies in jail and prison incarceration across the United States based on race and ethnicity. The San Diego Economic Equity report, produced in partnership with the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center, revealed that the Black incarceration rate was six to seven times greater than the White incarceration rate, while the Latino/a rate was two to three times greater than the White incarceration rate. We share this research to raise awareness about economic disparities in San Diego County. Additionally, we suggest using the report to inform future grant allocations, focusing on research that explores underlying factors contributing to inequality.
