Integrative Nursing | Creating Whole Health: A Clinical Model for Advanced Practice Integrative Nursing with Laura Sandquist DNP, APRN, CNP, IFMCP https://lnkd.in/geFmzBVg February 14, 2024 • Noon - 1 p.m. Central The content of the webinar is designed for nurses and health professionals. Participants can earn 1.0 continuing nursing education contact hours. The principles of integrative nursing can be applied to any setting & all levels of nursing practice. However, a clinical model for application in advanced practice nursing settings can be helpful to guide practical application of these principles, especially as it applies to the management & support of chronic disease in the outpatient clinic setting. This webinar led by Laura Sandquist DNP, APRN, A-GNP-C, IFMCP will explore an advanced practice nursing clinical model based on the synergy of the philosophies of integrative nursing & functional medicine that focuses on creating whole health. This sustainable model has been successfully implemented within a large insurance-based health system in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, & the department quadrupled in size from 5 to 20 practitioners since 2019 which demonstrates the high demand for this type of care. Participants will gain insights into how advanced practice integrative nursing models like this one can transform outpatient care in health systems & play a part in addressing social & structural determinants of health.

Baccalaureate Nursing Competencies I have met the Baccalaureate Nursing Competencies through both clinical experience and coursework. Patient-Centered Care: During all of my clinicals, I developed individualized care plans for my patients based on their specific needs so that they can have positive health outcomes. Quality Improvement: In my Case Studies course, I completed IHI training modules addressing quality improvement. Safety: During clinicals and simulations, I have demonstrated safety measures by completing 3 checks and going over the 7 rights of medication administration, keeping the side rails up and bed in the lowest position when not in the room with the patient, keeping the call light in the patient's reach at all times, and always identifying the patient using 2 patient identifiers. Teamwork and Collaboration: In my Case Studies course, I worked with a team to develop a PDSA to decrease the number of central-line associated bloodstream infections. Informatics: During my clinicals, I have become familiar with using Epic, a program for electronic health records. I have been able to look at and interpret data to help provide the best plan of care for patients. Evidence-Based Practice: In my Evidence-Base Practice course, I worked with a team researching incivility in nursing. We looked at the prevalence of incivility in nursing, factors contributing to it, and the effects it has on nurses and patient care. Together we developed an abstract with how to decrease incivility in nursing based on best practice through the research we found. Leadership: I serve as the Social Chair for the Aggie Pediatric Nursing Association. I plan and coordinate events for our members to meet and enjoy the company of others with an interest in pediatrics, as well as plan events with learning opportunities . Not only do I work with the officers of our organization, but I also coordinate with faculty and officers from other organizations as well. At every meeting, I speak to our members about upcoming events and point opportunities.

PEI leads the nation by recognizing family medicine as a standalone specialty: Prince Edward Island has become the first province in Canada to recognize family medicine as a standalone specialty, a significant milestone achieved through the recently signed five-year physician services agreement. The agreement also introduces a new Panel Incentive Program, rewarding family physicians who exceed their expected patient panel size, including taking patients off the provincial registry. This initiative is designed to encourage physicians to go above and beyond, further enhancing access to primary care for Islanders. In the past six months, PEI has hired 32 new doctors. These new hires combined with the province’s electronic medical records (EMR), patient medical homes and collaborative care model, innovative recruitment efforts, and the medical school, position PEI as the best place to come and practice medicine. PEI expands nursing roles to improve healthcare access: The Government of Prince Edward Island is introducing regulatory amendments to enhance healthcare across the province.  The changes include adding a new nursing profession, registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs), and allowing registered nurses (RNs) and RPNs who possess advanced education to apply for special authorization to prescribe medications. These updates, effective August 10, 2024, will improve access to care, ensure Islanders’ safety, and align the nursing practices in PEI with other jurisdictions. The new regulations officially recognize RPNs as a distinct profession, making PEI the first province in Eastern Canada to recognize psychiatric nursing. The regulations also allow RPNs and RNs with advanced certification to prescribe, dispense, and administer certain medications. To support these changes, the Province, through the Health Innovation Optimization of Scope of Practice for Health Care Professionals Grant, provided a grant to the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of PEI (CRNMPEI) in Spring 2024 to help with the education and training needed for these expanded roles.

NPs become licensed as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs)1. Physician Assistants (PAs):PAs earn master’s degrees and complete over 2,000 hours of clinical rotations. They receive general medical education modeled on medical school training. PAs are trained as medical generalists and work under the supervision of a doctor1. Duties and Responsibilities:Both NPs and PAs provide direct patient care, perform assessments, make diagnoses, and develop treatment plans. The primary difference lies in their level of supervision and autonomy:NPs can practice independently and prescribe medications in many states. PAs always work under a doctor’s supervision1. Quality of Care:For routine patient presentations, quality of care is similar among NPs, PAs, and physicians. Evidence is less robust for complex patients, and there is limited data on cost-effectiveness2. Value to Healthcare Organizations:NPs and PAs bring immense value by providing exceptional patient care and supporting care teams3. Studies have shown that APRN and PA care can promote care continuity, decrease ICU length of stay, and enhance resident physician and critical care fellow training4. They contribute to better patient outcomes and satisfaction while improving the efficiency of healthcare delivery5. In summary, both NPs and PAs play vital roles in addressing primary care needs and enhancing overall healthcare services. Their combined efforts contribute to a more effective and patient-centered healthcare system. The Next Generation NCLEX-RN (NGN) exam represents a significant evolution in the testing of nursing candidates, aimed at better assessing their clinical judgment and decision-making skills. This updated version of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) incorporates new question formats and a stronger emphasis on analyzing and responding to real-life clinical scenarios. Key Features of the NGN NCLEX-RN: Clinical Judgment Model: At the core of the NGN is the Clinical Judgment Model (CJM), designed to evaluate a candidate's ability to make sound clinical decisions. This model tests how nurses gather cues, analyze information, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take action, and evaluate outcomes. New Question Types: Besides traditional multiple-choice questions, the NGN includes novel item types such as extended multiple responses, extended drag-and-drop, cloze (fill-in-the-blank), and more. These new formats are intended to simulate the complexities of real-world nursing better and require deeper thinking and analysis. Enhanced Focus on Patient Care: The exam places a greater emphasis on the holistic aspects of nursing, including the social, psychological, and physical components of patient care. This approach aims to prepare new nurses for the multifaceted nature of patient care in today's healthcare environment. Adaptive Testing: Like its predecessor, the NGN NCLEX-RN continues to use computerized adaptive testing (CAT) technology. This means the difficulty of the exam adjusts based on the test-takers ability, providing a personalized assessment that accurately reflects their knowledge and skills. The introduction of the NGN NCLEX-RN is a response to the evolving healthcare landscape, which demands a higher level of critical thinking, clinical judgment, and comprehensive patient care from nurses. Aspiring RNs are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new exam format and content to ensure their preparation strategies are aligned with the NGN's objectives.
