Speaking from my own experience, Career Transition Partnership offer a fantastic service, so I am looking forward to the CTP Bristol Employment Fair. My 2 cents? Nobody should be leaving their respective service struggling to find employment, you don't deserve that after the sacrifices you have made. But you still must earn it. By attending events like these you are pushing from the outside, but you also need someone to pull you in from the inside. In a world with ever increasing use of AI for CV screening, I cannot stress enough the importance of getting face to face with potential employers. Employment fairs provide you with a golden opportunity for networking with people on your transition journey to initiate that pull. No matter how far along the transition you are, I implore you to attend, and if you can't make this one, go to the next one, it's worth a mere 1 day of GRT. There are plenty of service leavers in my network (and beyond) with more experienced that I, and some currently in transition, I would love to hear: what advice you would give a service leaver? or advice you have received that was useful to you?

We've officially kicked off our 2024 Employment Fair programme with a super-successful day in Newbury yesterday. When asked whether we'd met their expectations, Service leavers said: "Exceeded my expectations, great turnout of employers with a wealth of knowledge and information to share." "Cannot suggest any room for further improvement." "It was great because there was such a wide variety of employers and the free drink token was a great added extra." "It was awesome!" Because employment levels in Chicago and beyond have rebounded since the COVID-19 pandemic, but a new report has found teens and young adults across the city, particularly those of color, are still struggling to find consistent work. Black and Latino youth and young adults in Chicago continue to have higher jobless and out-of-school-and-jobless rates compared to White Chicagoans,” the report states, “highlighting the importance of implementing targeted programs to promote more equitable employment opportunities for youth and young adults.” According to the report, there were tens of thousands of teens and young adults in Chicago between the ages of 16-24 who are both out of school and jobless in 2022 — the year this study examined. Chicago remains worse off than Illinois and the U.S in joblessness for Black and Latino 16- to 19-year-olds and 20-to-24-year-olds, the report found. The highest percentages of joblessness in Chicago, recorded at 92.8%, were found around the South and West side neighborhoods of Pilsen, Bridgeport, McKinley Park, Fuller Park and Back of the Yards. On Wednesday, we held our seventh Employment Fair of the year, down in the South West at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol. It was our biggest ever event in terms of Exhibitor numbers, with 130 attending on the day, along with a far greater number of Service leavers than at the same event in 2023. It was incredible to see the transformation in confidence of so many Service leavers over the course of the day - we know better than anyone how overwhelming events like these can feel, and we speak to so many who aren't sure where to start, or how to approach the day. Despite that, the nerves and uncertainty invariably turn to optimism and assuredness in the space of a few hours, which highlights a Service leaver's ability to adapt and overcome. May 1 is National Skilled Trades Day! According to Forbes, over 53% of workers employed in a skilled trade are nearing retirement age. Compare that to the fact that only one in five students graduating from high school have shown an interest in trade jobs, and you can see why employers are having trouble finding workers.
