Why are nature conservation and crime linked? One word: LAND. Criminal networks seize land, violate property rights, and abuse natural resources for illicit trade to pad their illegal profits. Cui bono? China, Russia, and unscrupulous multinational corporations. Who suffers? Indigenous Peoples across Amazonia and American producers who play by the rules. Conservation and security are interlinked. How? LAND.

Great idea right!! Not value destroying mining activities.

What could the North Sea look like in the future and how do we get there? We outline this in our recently published North Sea Vision 2040: https://lnkd.in/ef9ccfcK, which Natuur & Milieu, Stichting De Noordzee, Vogelbescherming Nederland en Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL) developed together in dialogue with many North Sea stakeholders.   We advocate for an international long-term master plan for the North Sea. The plan should include agreements about the spatial distribution and the way in which economic activities take place in the North Sea.   Central message: Put nature first, we will all benefit from it!

Current research highlights that the simple act of sharing our environmental stories can lead to powerful conservation actions. Recently, I read an article that discusses how this sharing can ignite change, not just on a local scale, but globally. I remember a community initiative I participated in where we shared personal tales about our local beaches and how they’ve changed over the years. It was enlightening to realize that even small, individual stories can collectively create a wave of awareness and inspire others to act. The takeaway? Our voices are crucial in the fight for environmental sustainability. By sharing our experiences, we can foster a deeper connection and inspire collective action towards preserving our planet. Great to see research sustainability being the focus of a Landscape Review by the Medical Research Council. I particularly like this recommendation: “The development of minimum standards and frameworks for environmentally sustainable research practice. These must be created both with the view of enabling researchers to improve their practice and for funders to recognise good practice for environmentally sustainable research in submitted proposals. This could be simplified with potential panel guidance and achievement levels in acknowledged frameworks.”
