The death of civilians is one of the greatest tragedies of war. But contrary to popular belief, the majority are not killed by bullets or bombs. In times of conflict, civilians die TWICE as much from the destruction of livelihoods, health systems, homes, and malnutrition. The #HPV vaccination rate for girls in Sweden is at 83%, but only 2% in Bulgaria. This year’s World Immunization Week is a particularly special — and complicated — one. The Expanded Programme on Immunization is celebrating 50 years of working to ensure more equitable access to vaccines. Plus, we’re marking 10 years since the World Health Organization certified the South-East Asia region as polio-free, and 30 years for the Americas region. We’ve made enormous strides in the fight to #EndPolio and to protect children and their communities — due in large part to the tireless dedication of Rotary International and other UNICEF partners. But there’s more work to be done. Reports of #polio cases are on the rise in select countries. We’ve seen cases in the U.S., too. We can’t stop now. Opening of the 38th meeting of Europe’s Commission for Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication this morning in Copenhagen is a critical reminder that polio is still a threat to unvaccinated children everywhere. We have a collective responsibility to protect every child, everywhere, from preventable diseases like polio. As the Commission reviews progress and challenges in maintaining the WHO European Region’s polio-free status, my thoughts are also with the vulnerable children in Gaza and elsewhere who urgently need access to vaccines. Vaccination is not just a health intervention—it’s a lifeline. We must do everything possible to ensure these children are reached with life-saving vaccines, even in the most challenging circumstances. POLIO VACCINATION OF GAZA CHILDREN AMIDST CONFLICT : CAMPAIGN BY UNICEF, WHO, UNRWA AND PARTNERS : 1 START : Discovery of polio virus in environment, emergency vaccination campaign started in Gaza strip on 01 Sep 2024 (Under the aegis of UN agencies). 2 POLIO PAUSES : Area specific humanitarian pauses in firing agreed upon to administer life saving vaccine doses to children. 3 PROGRESS : 1.6 Billion doses of polio vaccine already entered Gaza. Over 2000 community health workers, volunteers & mobile teams are supporting the vaccination of 6,40,000 children under age 10. As on Sep 04, over 1,87,000 children have received the first dose of vaccine. 4 REQUIREMENT : Second vaccination round within four weeks to achieve 90% coverage. 5 Kudos to the UN agencies for their relentless efforts in building agreement and undertaking this mammoth task. Besides my interest in Cardiology, I do vaccine awareness campaign with the Voice of America (Deewa) to promote awareness and understanding of vaccination. Polio virus cases are more prevalent in the pashtoon population of both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore, our vaccination campaign is in Pashto language to help better understanding of the concerned communities. In this episode, we discussed the history and background of Vaccination, how small pox was eradicated, how Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched, and how can we prevent the vaccine associated adverse events. In the end of the session, questions of the participants who were live were also answered.
