Clinical research is extremely important to us and forms a fundamental pillar of our clinical priorities. To provide excellent health outcomes, we will give staff and our patients the best opportunities to participate in research which could translate into the very latest, and most effective, treatments. Our work with the Royal Free Charity will help our research go further and faster by helping to provide new opportunities for research to improve treatments. The more research we do, the better the care we can deliver to our patients. Read more about the groundbreaking research going on at our trust here https://lnkd.in/ecDvYCXq

Last week was #MakeItPublic week, run by the Health Research Authority and dedicated to making research open and accessible to all. This year's focus was registration of clinical trials, and to help mark this we published new guidance for charities on registering and reporting clinical research: what it is, how it works and how, as a sector, we can support transparency. https://lnkd.in/eSRAHsvi

For #PhilanthropyThursday we are highlighting Veterans Health Foundation For more than 90 years, VA clinicians have been improving the lives of Veterans and all Americans through health care discovery and innovation. VA Research is unique because of its focus on health and wellness issues that affect Veterans. Nested within the Veterans Health Administration—the nation’s largest health care system—VA Research is viewed by many experts as a model for rigorous, impactful research. Veterans Health Foundation and their partners have been able to bring fund 283 research projects, 5710 surgeries, 80 transplants, and more. Today especially, supporting veteran charities fosters a sense of patriotism and community. It encourages people to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday and the values of freedom, sacrifice, and unity. This can lead to a stronger, more connected community! Donating to veteran charities helps raise awareness about the ongoing needs of veterans. Many people are not fully aware of the struggles that veterans face after their service. By supporting charities like Veterans Health Foundation, we can help bring these issues to light and promote broader support and understanding. Consumers are being bombarded with information, and it’s important to keep in mind that not all of it is evidence-based. I spoke with Jessica Mathews at Fortune about the importance of leading with clinical strategy (vs. a business strategy that doesn’t prioritize patient outcomes) and why the data simply doesn’t (yet) support short-term use of GLP-1s for most. I do think it’s critical that we approach this (and every) conversation in the emerging science of obesity medicine with a lot of nuance. In the case of de-escalation of GLP-1s, specifically, it might be true that someone *could* take the medication for short-term use and not gain the weight back. In my experience, this happens in cases where someone has actually been prescribed these medications without meeting the clinical criteria to be on them to begin with — they simply wanted to lose a small amount of weight and then get off the medication once they’ve reached their goal. To be clear, this is not the way we prescribe at Found or the way I prescribe in my own private practice. In other cases where people stop despite the evidence against short-term use, it’s important to note that the current situation may be driving patients to make hard decisions. For many, taking medications that can cost upwards of $1K+ / month is simply too much. Or, due to the ongoing shortages, local availability is nonexistent. Cheaper alternatives via legacy obesity medications are available, and it’s also true that they are not, on the whole, as effective. Ultimately, we can’t say “everyone should be on GLP-1s forever” or “everyone should stop using GLP-1s once they’ve reached their goal weight.” We need more nuance, and we need to continue personalized, 1:1 care with trained specialists. Responsible prescribing and responsible marketing must continue to be the standard we set — patient outcomes depend on it. Read the piece here:https://lnkd.in/evz_BYbi

Top 10 #Type1Diabetes research priorities - chosen by people with #T1D, their families and healthcare professionals – have just been published. Watch the video to see the top 10 👇🏽 As the UK’s largest charitable funder of diabetes research, it’s critical that the research we fund address the concerns of people with diabetes and those who care for them. It’s also critical that we make sure others - academics, healthcare professionals and other research funders – hear these views loud and clear and act upon them. We’re proud to work with the Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) initiative, run by the James Lind Alliance and supported by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), to help bring the views of people with real-life experience of diabetes into research. Through surveys and workshops, this initiative finds and prioritises their most urgent concerns that can be answered through research. The top 10 #research priorities chosen by the #T1D community and led by Health Research Board (HRB) have just been published through this initiative 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/ebUEWXWi More about this work, including how it will help us direct research funding to where it’s needed most 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/e9HpGxzP

🌟 Bridging Cultural Gaps in Medicine 🌟 Highlighting this grant candidate’s achievements aims to generate awareness and drive funding for our KCMS Community Foundation grant, allowing us to assist a greater number of medical students. This grant candidate was inspired by a deeply personal experience when his grandfather, despite having Medicare, couldn't receive timely care due to systemic barriers. Witnessing his family's struggle to advocate for their elder highlighted the deep flaws in our healthcare system. This pivotal moment, along with his work as a COVID vaccinator, revealed the stark healthcare disparities affecting uninsured and immigrant families. 💬 "Seeing patients fall through the cracks of our healthcare system, especially my own grandfather, inspired me to pursue medicine to change these systems from within." Help support medical students like this one on a mission to create a more inclusive and accessible healthcare system. 👉 Donate Today and Empower Future Physicians! https://lnkd.in/gM-adavP #HealthEquity #ElderCare #ImmigrantHealth #CulturalCompetence #HealthcareForAll #SupportFutureDoctors #LatinoHealth #MigrantHealth #GlobalHealthJustice

Pro Bono in the Spotlight: Alpha-1 Europe Alliance 🌟 Highlighting our assistance to Alpha-1 Europe Alliance asbl, a collective voice representing alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) national patient organizations across Europe. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲: Crowell’s Frederik Van Remoortel and Camille Degrave advised the non-profit organization on the establishment of the newly formed Alpha-1 Europe Alliance, based in Belgium. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: The registration was completed on 17 October. This project will bring together national Alpha-1 patient organizations across Europe to advocate for improved diagnosis, care, and research. By raising awareness and sharing experiences, the patient community will improve the lives of those living with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in Europe. Additionally, this involves partnering with relevant stakeholders to engage in policy discussions, foster research toward a cure, and ensure patients' involvement in research and clinical trials. 💬 “Working with Alpha-1 Europe Alliance has been a rewarding experience. This initiative not only unifies patient organizations across Europe but also amplifies their voice in crucial policy discussions. We are proud to contribute to a cause that seeks to improve diagnosis, care, and ultimately the quality of life for individuals living with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.” - Camille Degrave At Crowell, we believe in using our legal expertise and human resources to make a positive impact. Public service and supporting pro bono initiatives align with our commitment to giving back to our community. Today, we announced a $2 million investment in research initiatives this year. Because there is still no cure for CF, because the mortality rate is still too high, and because there are still therapeutic gaps, research will continue to be a pillar of our mission. That’s why Cystic Fibrosis Canada is funding projects that align with the priorities of the Canadian CF community, in order to find answers and new solutions. Read the full breakdown of the funded initiatives here: https://bit.ly/3JG1rQF
