I'm always impressed by McDonald's strategy, whether it's their pricing strategy or their real estate business strategy behind the franchise business. Actually, it is quite funny that this quote is from Ray Kroc. Ray was certainly not the first. It is often thought that he is the founder of McDonald's. But that is not the case. The McDonald's restaurant already existed when he came in as a seller of milkshake machines. What Ray Kroc was, is the man who made McDonald's big. So yes, he was certainly daring, different and very innovative! As we already said: It helps, but you don't necessarily have to be the first. Having worked with franchise owners during my legal career and as Homrich Berg’s wealth strategist, I see this article and smile BUT… It also makes me think about something not mentioned here: the man in this article is no doubt a multimillionaire with a taxable estate and I hope he - and other franchise owners out there - are intimately familiar with very strict rules certain franchise owners must follow in estate planning. It makes me think about clients who went to estate attorneys who weren’t well-versed in planning for owners of McDonald’s, Chick Fil-A, Popeye’s, etc., only to have their families encounter an expensive mess later on. I use to have a “Little Wins” dinner every Thursday with two of my friends. We’d go around the table celebrating our wins for the week — no matter how big or small. Because research shows that recognizing our achievements, even little ones, can boost: ✅ Mood ✅ Motivation ✅ Productivity ✅ Performance Sadly, these dinners stopped when we moved to different cities. But I still find ways to praise my progress. Here’s one way: 1.) Create a table with a column for: ☑ Date  ☑ Achievement  ☑ Opportunity (made available by the achievement) ☑ Metric(s) 2.) At the end of each week, write down 3 (or more) achievements 3.) Celebrate yourself! This method has helped me: ✅ Land corporate promotions ✅ Gain courage when experiencing self-doubt ✅ Recognize progress on my entrepreneurial journey ——— Our brains are designed to look for problems. That’s why we dwell on failures more than achievements. But don’t be so quick to discount your progress. Comment with a win you’re celebrating this week. All roads lead back to Real Estate Whether you're running a laundromat or a bowling alley, when you compare the expenses and operational demands, real estate often emerges as the less complicated and more stable option. The McDonald's model is a prime example from that famous movie: "We're not in the burger business; we're in the real estate business." Ray Kroc revolutionised the franchise model by tying lease amounts to gross sales, creating a revenue-sharing model. This approach incentivized franchisees to maximise sales and maintain their properties, benefiting both parties. Love him or hate him, Kroc's strategy propelled McDonald's to its current global success and has become a blueprint for other businesses. Holding the real estate and leasing it back to operators is a brilliant, sustainable strategy. Okay, even though no one asked for it, here's my two cents on how Chick-fil-a fumbled the freakin' bag. Ultimately I agree that they made a HUGE error in not allowing Miri to continue making content. It will not likely reflect in their bottom line at the end of the day, but it may cost them someone who is obviously a wonderful team member. I do however understand the fear brands have with UGC. If a brand agrees to a partnership with an influencer regardless of size, and there is any form of controversy with said creator, where's the first place people are going to run? There is so much additional crisis planning that companies need to have in place before implementing a UGC campaign. (Especially a company like chick-fil-a who is already intimately familiar with boycotts and protests.) But it seems that even companies like Trader Joes have fallen victim to the fear. At the end of the day, the risk is well worth the reward, and it is crazy to me that a multi-million dollar company did not come to the same conclusion.

Raymond Albert Kroc (1902-1984). The man who signed up to selling paper cups and milk shake mixers after World War II. That’s until he spotted a diamond in the rough while doing his thing. Well, one day, he bumped into a modest hamburger restaurant owned and run by two brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald in San Bernadino, California. The man was impressed. Being the visionary that he was, Kroc talked the two brothers into franchising their business, and thereon implemented a myriad of innovative business strategies that propelled its growth to levels never imagined by the founders. Still seeing its potential, Kroc went on to purchase McDonald’s from Maurice and Richard McDonald. The rest is history. Today, McDonald's is the world’s largest fast food restaurant chain, present in 100+ countries. Right after Walmart, it’s the world’s second largest private employer and in 2022, the world’s sixth highest in terms of brand value. Ray Kroc, the maverick of fast food, is also known for many legendary quotes. For me, the one that takes the prize (and live by) is this one… “When you’re green, you’re growing.
