For their new headquarters, JEA had a clear vision: ➡️ Remain situated on the north side of the river in support of the downtown core ➡️ Maintain proximity to transportation and downtown amenities ➡️ Provide enhanced capacity in turn providing improved efficiency Collaboration between the design, construction, and client stakeholder teams helped to establish clear objectives, define budgetary constraints, and identify essential sustainability features. Drawing upon the collective expertise of the project team, strategic decisions were made to significantly reduce the building's energy consumption, ensuring optimal comfort, humidity control, and future adaptability. The new headquarters is certified LEED Gold and is seeking WELL certification, aiming to set a new sustainability standard in Jacksonville. To support JEA's ‘work from anywhere’ mentality, the team wasted no time incorporating the fresh, hybrid, ‘no address’ workspaces into the design. The dynamic design is aimed to appeal to JEA’s multi-generational workforce and advance the effort to retain and recruit quality employees. The design embodies a holistic approach. Factors considered range from skyline views to augmenting the experience for both employees and customers. Abundant natural light, flexible open floorplates, and access to outdoor spaces are prominent features, fostering an environment conducive to productivity and employee well-being. We’ve secured planning for another Net Zero project in Manchester ♻️ Hot on the heels of our work at Island - our 100,000 sq ft of Net Zero workspace that’s soon to complete - we’ve today secured planning for another pioneering HBD place. Colloco will offer 200,000 sq ft, state-of-the-art workspace in the St John’s district of the city. Designed by our friends EPR Architects, it will be built to Net Zero Carbon in both construction and operation and is targeting an EPC A and BREEAM Excellent ratings. It will also be compliant with British Council for Offices standards and include a host of amenities aligned with the WELL building standards. Speaking of the news, our colleague Adam Brady said: “Colloco represents a new era in workspace design. The building looks to attract dynamic, forward-thinking organisations, which see collaboration and the health and wellbeing of their employees as fundamental to the success of their business.” As keen collaborators, we’re now on the hunt for a joint venture partner to take the scheme forward. In addition to the Bullitt Center and Beitou Public Library, several other buildings have successfully integrated well building concepts, showcasing the positive outcomes of prioritizing occupant health and environmental sustainability. One notable example is The Edge, located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Completed in 2015, The Edge is renowned for its innovative design and commitment to sustainability. It boasts features such as advanced energy-efficient systems, including solar panels and rainwater harvesting, as well as cutting-edge technology for optimizing indoor climate and lighting conditions. The building's emphasis on employee well-being is evident in its biophilic design elements, such as green walls and ample natural light, which have been linked to improved productivity and satisfaction among occupants. Similarly, the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco, California, has set a new standard for sustainable skyscrapers. Completed in 2018, this LEED Platinum-certified building incorporates numerous well building principles, including efficient energy and water usage, enhanced indoor air quality, and access to natural light and outdoor spaces. Its comprehensive wellness program, which includes amenities such as fitness centers, meditation rooms, and healthy food options, has been credited with fostering a positive work environment and attracting top talent. These examples underscore the transformative impact of well building concepts on the built environment. By prioritizing the health and well-being of occupants, as well as environmental sustainability, these buildings not only enhance quality of life but also set a precedent for future developments. As the demand for healthier and more sustainable spaces continues to grow, the integration of well building concepts will undoubtedly play a central role in shaping the future of architecture and urban design. #WellBuildingSuccess #SustainableArchitecture #HealthySpaces #GreenBuildingInnovation #OccupantWellbeing #EnvironmentalStewardship #InnovativeDesign #BuildingPerformance #CommunityEngagement

President at Slide Clear - Adaptable Space - Outdoor Enclosures, Operable walls, Patios, and the wide open doors that connect to them.
Absolutely, the conversation around sustainability and eco-friendly practices has gained significant traction, even in the planning of outdoor spaces. The traditional approach of heating or cooling open outdoor areas, which is not only inefficient but also costly and wasteful, is facing increased scrutiny. Enclosing these spaces emerges as a viable solution that greatly enhances functionality while aligning with sustainability goals.

Patio enclosures and outdoor spaces play a pivotal role in enhancing not just the aesthetics but also the thermal efficiency of both indoor and outdoor spaces. These versatile structures contribute significantly to energy savings, creating a more sustainable living environment. By acting as a buffer against external weather elements, patio enclosures help regulate temperature, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling indoors. This not only leads to cost-effective energy consumption but also aligns with sustainable practices. Embracing patio enclosures fosters a harmonious indoor/outdoor experience, allowing individuals to connect with nature without compromising on thermal comfort. The restaurant industry has been at the forefront of advancing the architecture and design of outdoor spaces. Nevertheless, the impact of outdoor enclosures is extending beyond restaurants. Multi-family rooftop amenity areas, secure environments for schools, senior living communities, and workplaces are increasingly recognizing the transformative effects of these outdoor enclosures. They play a crucial role in elevating the overall human experience, creating safe and inviting spaces that go beyond the traditional confines of just the traditional patio.
