Is your boss secretly a Jedi Knight? As I glanced over my shoulders, a strange thought came across my mine. Is my boss, JW, a Jedi Knight? I could not help but notice his calm demeanour, his ability to foresee problems before they happen, and most importantly his ability to rally our unwavering support. Alright, JW might really be a Jedi Knight, but a calm demeanour is definitely not the right description for JW. When JW is in the office, you could often hear him before you enter the office. But in a lively, spirited way (often candid as well). Although he is loud, he has never been the commanding and autocratic type of a leader. In fact, his leadership was quite the opposite, being inclusive, genuine, warm and approachable. However, my bar for identifying a true leader is pretty high, and someone with the above qualities will not automatically meet my criteria for a leader. I needed more much more. Then, something changed. Two years ago, our previous firm, an infrastructure investment firm, was acquired by PATRIZIA, a German based global real asset firm. As with any mergers, change was inevitable. One key focus was to continue to demonstrate relevance and value. Under these circumstances, it is natural for humans to focus on self-promotion, yet this was not what I saw. Instead of seeking personal glory, every action that JW took was centred on the team rather than himself. He has and continues to invest many of his personal hours, often sacrificing his evenings for calls with Germany due to our Australia time zone, to showcase our team to the wider company. While he could delegate these calls, I sense his reluctance to burden any of us. Being a parent myself, I understand the difficult choices he had to make. His ongoing actions have deeply touched my heart. The capacity to give without expecting anything in return for the team solidifies his role as a Jedi Knight leader in my eyes. As Simon Sinek has famously quoted “The mind can be convinced, but the heart must be won” Well JW, you have convinced our minds and won our hearts. Just so you know, we have got your back too. What advice would you give to early career Black finance professionals who are working toward landing in a CFO seat? "Of course, you should be prepared with superior education and experience. Unfortunately though, no matter how well prepared, trained, and mentored you are, systemic challenges remain for women in management, especially Black women and all minorities. However, building a network is important to leading you to the path to CFO. It will connect you with individuals that are willing to mentor, advise and develop you as well as position you for success." Who have been your key mentors and how have they helped you in your career journey? How did you find and engage with those mentors? "My answer is cliché, but I am lucky to have two people have been consistently mentoring me. My mother and father have been my key mentors in getting to where I am today. And it doesn't hurt that they are also my biggest cheerleaders. However, I was fortunate to have a father who was a financial and real estate professional. He has guided and trained me on many of the skills that I possess today in my current role.
