Australia’s animal protection sector has published an open letter calling on the Albanese Government to fund the phase out of live sheep export in the upcoming Federal Budget and to legislate the trade’s end date. We know that a phase out of live sheep export is the only way forward. This trade, which has seen disaster after disaster, is simply unfixable. The animal welfare issues are cumulative and inherent, and cannot be adequately addressed by regulation. The majority of Australians support a phase out. It's time for the Government to take action. Will you help create an animal welfare system that works for animals, not against them? 🐮 Right now, the government is failing animals. Hens are still trapped in battery cages, lambs suffer from painful live lamb cutting without prior pain relief, and racehorses are beaten with whips in an attempt to make them run faster. These cruel practices remain legal because our current animal welfare system is riddled with conflicts of interest, inconsistent laws, and outdated standards that ignore science and public expectations. The #FairGoForAnimals 6-point reform framework is designed to build a fairer system for animals. Learn more and add your name today at https://lnkd.in/gtzYCsG9 #AnimalWelfarePolicy #AnimalWelfare

🌟WEDNESDAY WIN🌟 Big news for animal welfare! The UK government has implemented stricter laws against animal neglect and welfare offences 🐾 Penalty notices of up to £5000 could be issued for poor animal living conditions and health offences (1)🚨 Many described it as “a useful tool to promote animal welfare, dissuade illegal activity, ease pressure on an overburdened court/legal system, and provide quicker resolution to any offences committed than court cases.” (2) Yet, there’s more to be done! Watch to find out why and follow us for more animal welfare wins. If you want to make a difference, sign the petition for stricter sentences against animal abusers today. We recently spoke to the Weekly Times about the need to reform our broken animal welfare system. Improving national animal welfare standards in Australia has stalled, and the animals are the ones who are left to suffer. In 2005, a review of the national model codes of practice for nine livestock animals recommended a new series of animal welfare standards and guidelines. Yet, very little has changed. In some cases, it has taken ten years for new standards to go through the review, development and implementation process, and when they are finally implemented, they're out of date. The system is broken, and animals deserve better. That is why we are calling for a #FairGoForAnimals. We have devised a new framework for a fairer, independent system that better represents the interests of animals. Congratulations President Ursula von der Leyen, on your re-election. As re-elected President of the European Commission you now have the unique opportunity to finish what you started last term and deliver the change that was promised for animals 🐾 We trust that you will fulfill your commitment to overhauling EU animal welfare legislation, responding to the societal demand for higher standards on farms, animal welfare labeling, more protection for animals during slaughter, and a ban on cages and fur farming. Delivering on this is a crucial step in restoring citizens' trust in EU policies. #EU #AnimalWelfare #EuropeanCommission #DoBetterForAnimals

A General Election is just over two weeks away, and we’re calling for animal welfare to be a priority for the next UK Government. You can support Hope Rescue’s aims for this election by asking your election candidates to prioritise animal welfare. What is their stance on our 5 priorities? 1. Stronger breeding regulations to protect dogs from being bred in low welfare conditions or with innate health issues. 2. Improved dog control legislation that tackles the root causes of dog-related incidents. 3. Protection for imported pets including legislation to deal with puppy smuggling and ear-cropping. 4. A phased end to greyhound racing in UK 5. Statutory grants for animal welfare organisations. In recent years, there have been missed opportunities to strengthen protections for vulnerable dogs, but there is a chance in the future for decision makers to bring positive change for animal welfare. Find out more on our website 👇 https://lnkd.in/eBeHFZQJ Use your vote to help vulnerable dogs. Thank you 🐾 #GeneralElection2024 #AnimalWelfare

So what do New Zealanders think of the current Government’s decision to reintroduce live exports? In a recent independent survey, the response from the public is crystal-clear: only 12% trust the live export industry. Only 19% of New Zealanders think the ban should be overturned. While we celebrated the ban on the horrific practice of live exports by sea only last year, the current Government is choosing to ignore the views of the overwhelming majority; an unethical move which will prove a shameful leap backwards for animal welfare in New Zealand.

More than 10 billion farmed animals are bred, raised, and killed for food in the United States each year. However, on-farm protections for animals (excepting those raised to meet federal organic standards) are limited to a patchwork of laws enacted in 18 states. AWI has just released the second edition of “Enforcement of State Farmed Animal Welfare Laws”—a comprehensive review of enforcement records pertaining to state-level on-farm protections for farmed animals. We found these laws to vary significantly in form of protection and species protected—as well as in the various states’ commitment to their enforcement and to public transparency with respect to enforcement activities. This post highlights a few key takeaways. To read the full report, visit https://lnkd.in/ehH6vF_5.

Addressing the pressing issue of stray animal overpopulation in the Philippines is crucial for public health and animal welfare. PETA and PAWS highlight the challenge: 12 million stray dogs and prolific feral cat colonies. This poses significant risks like rabies outbreaks. Controlling stray populations through neutering is vital. While individual adoptions are commendable, collective action is needed. Policymakers should prioritize this issue and strengthen animal protection laws. Collaboration between LGUs, animal welfare groups, and the private sector is key. Together, we can drive campaigns, promote adoption, and provide essential neutering services. Let's advocate for a society that respects and cares for its animals—a reflection of our national values. #AnimalWelfare #PublicHealth 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g57yNBpF

#Breaking news: the European Commission today announced the appointment of a European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare. This is a historic moment for animals, as for the first time #animalwelfare is included in the title of a Commissioner, ensuring that this issue remains a priority in all relevant discussions. This is extremely important, especially following the Commission's commitment to deliver the promised revision of animal welfare legislation, including the ban on cages, as part of the #StrategicDialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture. We are extremely pleased with President Ursula von der Leyen's decision, as it is in line with the demands of more than 300,000 European citizens who signed the #EUforAnimals petition - led by our member GAIA, calling for such a Commissioner. We are also happy to see that animal welfare remains the responsibility of the Health Commissioner, ensuring a #OneHealth approach that recognises the interconnection between animal welfare, public health and the environment. May this be the mandate for animals, where we will finally see better standards for all animals, empty cages and a ban on fur. Full press release here: ttps://bit.ly/3Zta5Lh
