The Week ahead: Budgetary matters France and the UK have become unexpectedly joined in their political and policy cycles since June, with 10 year bond yields rising relative to other countries in the four months since the European parliamentary elections. Whereas German 10 year yields have declined by 35 basis points since the European elections, French 10 year yields have fallen by 5bp and UK 10 year yields by only 1bp. if the average European voter is moving towards the centre-right, it's only natural that EU policies do too. but the challenges we face as Europeans - cost of living, security, climate- cannot be solved only with right-wing, liberal or left-wing politics alone. this is why the EU, as the phenomenal consensus-building machine that it is, will rise above changes in the national political mood and deliver on what's best for Europeans as a whole. let's keep reforming the EU so that it makes decisions faster and more resolutely. these are some of the messages I shared at this online session with EU Issue Tracker. I can only recommend hearing Camilla Palla's more specific take on how to prepare, as a public affairs professional, to the new political cycle. thanks Geraint Edwards and FiscalNote for the invitation.

On January 1st, #Belgium took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first semester of 2024. The timing of the Belgian Presidency is crucial, as the election of the new European Parliament will take place on 6-9 June 2024: as the current institutional cycle concludes, the Belgian Presidency will support the transition to the next one. In this briefing, UTOPIA highlighted the key priorities of the Presidency in alignment with the upcoming EU elections. It provides an overview of legislative dossiers where ongoing efforts are anticipated post-election, as well as those the Presidency aims to successfully conclude within each Council configuration. Find out about the agenda, the priorities and the key stakeholders of the #BelgianPresidency by downloading our briefing here👇

One of the most interesting things I've found during this election cycle on the road to the EU elections in France has been the spillover of national debates into the space. We find a Bardella (Le Pen camp) and Hayer (Macron camp) match up once more. But with current polls indicating 31% of 18–24-year-olds voting for the far-right and only 4% voting for the presidential camp, there are clearly lessons to be drawn on the road to the Presidential elections in 2027. The EU election results will be important for France to take seriously moving forward.

Opinion: Biggest flaw in EU democracy is lack of political debate The European elections are just around the corner. Democracy in the EU has shortcomings, but the EU has mostly lacked political debate in recent decades. It is good that this is changing. In June, more than 400 million Europeans will have to go to the polls again for ... yes, what exactly? If you do not know what European elections are for, it is not up to you. For a long time, a vote in European elections was mainly a vote for the EU. That tide is turning, and that is a good thing. Because European elections should not be a celebration of European unity, but a battle between political visions. In our first expert video, Koen van Zon, Postdoctoral Researcher at Studio Europa Maastricht, discusses the layers of European elections and why we have them in the first place. Since 1979, we’ve been electing representatives to the European Parliament, but did you know it wasn’t always like this? Originally unelected, the European Parliament gained momentum through elections, yet its powers remain distinct from national parliaments. “Historically, the turnout in European elections has been rather low. This changed in 2019 because of big issues playing out in Europe.” Stay tuned for more expert videos on important topics, as we approach the upcoming elections. 🗳️ Make sure to take part in our weekly EuroPolls on Instagram, to share your insights on these crucial topics. #EuroPolls #WorkingonEurope #MaastrichtDebate
